Marlyn was born on Chambers Flat at the family home October 23, 1925, to Eugene and Edna Cochrane. He was the third child of 5. He attended the Chambers Flat Country School and graduated from Potlatch High School with the class of 1943. He was a Navy veteran of World War ll. In 1943 he started the Navy with training at Farragut Naval Training Station. He was a Gunner's Mate 3rd Class, on the USS Neville. Marlyn's ship was in gunfire in the Pacific Ocean. He was discharged in 1946. When he came home from the Navy, his logging career began, working with his childhood and lifelong friend Eddie Vowels, near Bovil at Camp 42 using the cross cut saw. He married 'The Besst Girl', Virginia (Besst) Cochrane, May 8, 1948 at the Potlatch Union Church. They started their home in Princeton on a section of the family property on Chambers Flat. They later moved to Hatter Creek in Princeton, where they raised their 3 children and lived for 48 years. Hatter Creek is where Marlyn built endless fences, grew his own hay to feed his cattle, horses and his kids' 4-H animals. He enjoyed farming and especially found joy in raising the cattle on his farm. He also liked being involved with the 4-H Hatter Creek Country Cousins and the Cayuse Kids Saddle Club. Marlyn was a kind, loving and hardworking man. He farmed the Palouse and logged for Vowels Logging, Larrabee Logging, and Hansen Logging. While working in Alaska for many years, his sons were honored to work by his side logging in the Aleutian Islands. He loved hunting in Idaho, fishing in Alaska and riding his bike in Arizona. A favorite hunting memory for him and his family was when he shot a bull moose. For 30 years Marlyn and Virginia were snowbirds and had a home in Arizona in the Yuma Foothills. In Arizona, he enjoyed the sunshine, picking local fruits, and gardening. He and Virginia moved from Hatter Creek to Lewiston in 1993 and then to St. Maries at their current residence. Survivors include his wife of 68 years, Virginia (Besst) Cochrane, at the St. Maries home; daughter; Linda Weinmann and husband Mick, son Wendell Cochrane and wife Bobbie and son Kent Cochrane and his wife Bonnie.
