Michael Duncan

Obituary of Michael Stanley Duncan

Michael Stanley Duncan (34) resident of St. Maries passed away on June 23, 2023.  He was born to David McNutt and Janice Duncan on May 9, 1989, in Auburn, WA.  Michael spent most of his childhood in Enumclaw, WA.  After Janice’s passing, he moved to live with his dad and mom (Debbie) in St. Maries, and he graduated St. Maries High School with the class of 2009.  Debbie made a promise to his mother to love him as her own, and she kept that promise.  From the day Michael came to live with them, they had weekly french fry dates at Serv – A – Burger for simple conversation about school days and teenage love interests. His dad enjoyed Michael being home giving him the opportunity to take him hunting and putting on paint ball tournaments for Michael and his friends.

Following high school, Michael worked a variety of different jobs.  He worked at Regulus Stud Mills, Inc., he spent 7 years in Tioga, ND working in the Bakken Oil Fields, roofing at Harvey’s Roofing, and his current employer Empire Insulation.  Although they had many mutual friends and their paths had crossed at one point or another, he met his soulmate Ashley DeVault in 2020 when he patroned the Gem State and she was working.  She thought he was 16 years old and asked him for his ID; he ended up later asking her out, and he stood her up on their first date; however, he redeemed himself when he offered her Red Lobster, property, and baby cows – it was love at first sight and the couple dated a couple of years before he proposed on Valentines Day 2023.

Growing up, Michael was a spunky kid from the get-go, when he first came to visit his dad and mom Debbie at the age of 3, she asked him if he knew who she was, and he put his hand on his hip with a serious face and said, “You’re the Mommy!” Michael was always up for an adventure.  He enjoyed playing pool, but he loved the outdoors and everything it had to offer.  Fishing, hunting, swimming, hiking, shed hunting, riding dirtbikes and snowmobiles were his passions.  A pretty talented mechanic you could find him tinkering on something at most times.  He enjoyed mudding and hanging out with his friends, forming brotherly bonds with most of them, and their children all thought of him as Uncle Dunk.  He was ready to partake in fun at the drop of a hat and was always ready for the next adventure.  Born accident prone, he missed his calling as a poster child for AFLAC breaking more bones in his body than most people do.  Most importantly, he was probably one of the most genuine people you would ever meet, what you saw is what you got with him, he was an amazing son and friend who loved his family and his friends wholeheartedly.

Michael is survived by his fiancé Ashley and their children Tristen and Nevaeh; his parents Dave and Debbie McNutt of St. Maries, ID; siblings Billy C. Clare III of Grand Islands, NE and Joshua P. Clare of Dallas, PA; grandparents Stanley and Deborah (Newman) McNutt of St. Maries, ID; 4 nieces; 2 nephews; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, and friends; and his beloved lab Colt.  He is preceded in death by his mother Janice Duncan; grandmothers Carol McNutt and Marge Duncan; grandfather Doc Duncan; and uncle Steven J. McNutt.

A Memorial Service to celebrate Michael’s life will be on Friday, July 7, 2023, at 3:00 pm at the St. Maries Assembly of God Church in St. Maries.  A gathering of friends and family will follow in the fellowship hall of the church.
