Michael C. Martin, 66, of Fernwood, Idaho, passed away peacefully at his home on November 16, 2025. He was born on October 16, 1959, in Fort Ord, California. As the son of a Master Sergeant, Michael grew up traveling extensively with his family, spending time across the United States as well as in Vietnam and Germany. These early experiences gave him a love of adventure and an ability to connect easily with people from all walks of life.
Michael attended high school in Yuba City, California, but left before graduating to pursue work on a commercial fishing boat out of Prudhoe Bay, Alaska. After six challenging months at sea, he returned home and worked for Jensen Security for four years. He later earned his CDL and drove cement trucks for Georgetown and A&A Concrete until a back injury ended his working career.
In 1979, Michael reconnected with his childhood friend, Darlene Herdeg, asking her to a fireman’s ball. From that moment, their love story began. The two were married on December 27, 1980, in Reno, Nevada. They made their home in California until 2000, when they moved to Montana, and eventually settled in Fernwood, Idaho, in 2006.
Michael was known for his generous heart and willingness to help anyone in need. In Fernwood, he happily plowed snow at the library, the senior center, and for several neighbors. Though disabled, he embraced the Idaho lifestyle wholeheartedly. With the support of good friends, he was still able to hunt, fish, pan for gold, and explore the outdoors he loved so much. He also enjoyed collecting rocks, spending countless hours playing solitaire, and watching the Outdoor Channel. A devoted Denver Broncos fan, Michael never met a stranger he couldn’t have a conversation with, he had a true gift of gab—he could talk with anyone, anywhere, about anything.
Michael’s presence, kindness, and easygoing spirit will be deeply missed by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife Darlene at their home in Fernwood; children Courtney Martin of Billings, MT and Brandy (Nate) Jordan of Lockwood, MT; siblings Denis (Heather), Christina, Glynda, and Melynda; 3 grandchildren Cadence, Harper and Teagan; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his father and his brother Richard Martin Jr.
