Phyllis Jean Dodge, 76, former longtime resident of St. Maries, ID and recent resident of Post Falls, ID, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2025, surrounded by her loving family.
Phyllis was born on June 18, 1949, in Moscow, ID, to Union Jack and Pearl McPherson. She grew up on her family’s farm in Viola, where she learned early the values of hard work, resourcefulness, and caring for others, especially her younger siblings. The McPherson family moved often before finally settling in St. Maries, where Phyllis graduated with the St. Maries High School Class of 1969.
After graduation, Phyllis attended nursing school in Chicago for a year before returning home to St. Maries, where she married Carlis Hanlan. Together, they welcomed three children. Phyllis devoted her early years to raising them, later working for Pat and Scotts. She subsequently spent many years at Angie’s Smoke Shop, becoming a familiar and friendly face to customers and friends alike.
She later accepted a position at Walmart in Post Falls, and after a couple of years of commuting she made Post Falls her home. Phyllis dedicated 24 years to Walmart—work she took pride in—until her illness ultimately forced her to step away.
Phyllis lived her life with a generous heart, a strong spirit, and just the right amount of sass. She loved gardening, growing both vegetables and flowers with her great-grandchildren. A talented seamstress, she made clothes, quilts, and countless handmade treasures over the years. She was an exceptional cook who could “make something out of nothing,” and her potato salad remains a cherished family favorite.
Phyllis loved spending quality-time with her family most of all. Every Christmas, each family member received a new pair of pajamas, a tradition she carried out with love. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and delighted in taking them on spontaneous shopping trips. Summers at her home always included the biggest pool she could find, set up so the kids could splash and laugh for hours. Phyllis loved visits, gatherings, and dropping by her grandchildren’s homes just to say hello.
Phyllis is survived by her children Calleen Hanlan of Post Falls, ID; Stacy (Marissa) Hanlan of St. Maries, ID; and Gary Hanlan of St. Maries, ID; her siblings Hazel (Bill) Krull of Springdale, WA; Nancy (Brad) Sullivan of Oakesdale, WA; and Floyd (Sheryl) McPherson of Post Falls, ID; along with five grandchildren Jenna (Andrew) Bonesteel of Spokane Valley, WA; Casy (Michelle) Hanlan of Three Forks, MT; Slyder Lewis of Fernwood, ID; Tylee (Jaden) Romo of Coeur d’ Alene, ID; and Jamisen Hanlan of St. Marie’s, ID; ten great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; brothers William “Jack” McPherson and Sherman McPherson; and her beloved grandson, Chaz Hanlan.
Services will be held Wednesday, November 26, 2025, beginning with a visitation and viewing at 11:00 a.m. at Hodge Funeral Home. A graveside service will follow at 1:00 p.m. at Woodlawn Cemetery. A Memorial Service will be held at 2:00 p.m. at College Avenue Baptist Church, with a potluck meal to conclude the gathering.
