Randall D. Mattson Obituary

Randall D. Mattson, 64, a resident of St. Maries, Idaho, passed away at Benewah Community Hospital after a courageous battle with cancer.

Randy was born on January 9, 1961, in Kalispell, Montana, to Kenneth and Francis (Ramsey) Mattson. He was raised in Kalispell and left school after the ninth grade to begin logging alongside his father, marking the start of a lifetime of hard work and determination.

Randy married Carol Beller, and together they welcomed two children, Cole and Aimee. The family made their home in Kalispell until 1991, when Randy’s work brought them to St. Maries. He continued working in the woods and, in 1995, branched into timber sales and forestry, a job and passion of his that he mostly worked at a full-time capacity, but still worked part time during his other business ventures. Carol passed away in 2001.

In 2006, Randy established Tumblestone Quarries, where he crushed and sold flat landscaping rock. He operated the business for six years before fully returning to timber sales. Randy then opened a gold mine he called the Mother Lode in Murray, ID. To say running that mine was one of the most memorable adventures is an understatement.  The producers from the show Gold Rush even stopped by the same month he shut the mine down due to landslides.  In 2012, he met Terri Richardson, and the two later married. They lived and spent cherished time in Belize and Coeur d’Alene before Terri’s passing in 2024. After retiring, Randy spent his time between his children’s homes, something that became a blessing for all of them.

Randy enjoyed working more than anything; he was a man who lived to work rather than worked to live. He was an inventor with a sharp mind, holding several patents, and his willingness to tackle any challenge helped him establish multiple businesses throughout his life. When he did take time away from work—though rarely—you could find him in the mountains or out fishing, places he loved deeply.

Randy is survived by his children, Cole Mattson of Post Falls, ID, and Aimee (Chris) Norton of St. Maries; sisters, Cindy Koeper of Lewiston, ID, and Linda Brewer of Bakersfield, CA; seven grandchildren; and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wives, Carol Mattson and Terri Mattson; and his brothers, Larry Mattson and Alan Mattson.

At Randy’s request, no services will be held.
