Billie J Machado Obituary

Billie J. Machado (92), a treasured and well-known resident of St. Maries, Idaho, passed away peacefully at Valley Vista Care Center on February 21, 2026.

Billie was born on July 11, 1933, in Scotia, California, to Clifford and Lola Cook. She grew up in Holmes, California, where her competitive spirit and lively energy shined brightly. She excelled at softball and tennis, graduating from high school in 1951 with a strong work ethic and a love for people that would define the rest of her life.

Shortly after high school, Billie met the love of her life, William “Bill” Machado. After a whirlwind courtship, they were married on November 24, 1951, in Gardnerville, Nevada — beginning a beautiful partnership that would span decades of adventure, hard work, and deep devotion.

Billie began her career as a dietician at General Hospital in Eureka, California, and later worked at Johnny’s Cookhouse in Fortuna. Even then, it was clear that food was more than a job for Billie — it was her love language. In 1973, she and Bill moved to St. Maries, Idaho. Billie worked as a travel agent for Ticket Quick, and together they owned and operated the Montgomery Wards catalog store in town. But her heart always returned to the kitchen.

She eventually became the dietician and head cook at Valley Vista Care Center — and if there was a crowd to be fed, Billie was the one you wanted in charge. She didn’t just cook meals; she fed people’s hearts. Her kitchen was a place of warmth, laughter, and second helpings.

In true Machado fashion, life took another turn when the family moved to Alaska, where they lived in a wanigan. Billie worked at the local liquor and grocery store while Bill hauled logs for Larry Derry. Eventually, they retired back home to St. Maries, where Billie continued doing what she loved most — feeding people.

Billie volunteered faithfully at the Eagles and the Senior Mealsite. She was a member of the Eagles for nearly 50 years and a devoted member of St. Mary’s Immaculate Catholic Church. If there was a fundraiser, holiday gathering, or community event, chances are Billie was in the kitchen making sure no one left hungry.

She was a gifted pianist who could sit down and fill a room with beautiful music. She was a member of TOPS and truly a social butterfly — welcoming everyone with open arms. Holidays at Billie’s house were legendary. No one was ever turned away, and she could feed a small army without breaking a sweat. In fact, she even published her own cookbook designed specifically for cooking for “over 50” — meaning a crowd of 50 or more people.

She could make something out of nothing, stretch a meal farther than anyone thought possible, and her cinnamon rolls were famous far beyond her own kitchen. But of all the things she made, her greatest joy was her family. She adored her grandchildren and great-grandchildren and loved every opportunity to gather them around her table.  Billie’s life was measured not in recipes, but in the countless plates she filled, the doors she opened, and the love she poured out so freely. Her table may be quiet now, but her legacy of generosity and hospitality will continue in every kitchen she inspired.

Billie is survived by her children, Jerry (Terri) Machado of St. Maries, ID; Dan (Sheri) Machado of Redcrest, CA; and Sandy Young of Belgrade, MT; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Bill; her parents; and her sister, Lola “Dee Dee” Marie.
