Dean Oliver Pakootas Obituary

Longtime Plummer, Idaho resident Dean Oliver Pakootas, 62, passed away peacefully with his loving family at his side on March 3, 2026.

Dean was born February 24, 1964, in Spokane, Washington, to Oliver and Donna (Matt) Pakootas. He was raised in Tekoa, Washington and Plummer, Idaho, and graduated from Plummer High School with the Class of 1982.

Following high school, Dean began working for the Coeur d’Alene Tribe in their Family Reunification Program, where he served as a caregiver for children in the program. He spent several years in this role, helping care for and guide young people in the community. When the Coeur d’Alene Tribal Casino opened, Dean joined the team and found a job that truly fit his personality. Working as a cashier and greeter, he loved meeting people and visiting with guests. Dean remained a familiar and welcoming face at the casino for 30 years, until illness forced him to retire.

Dean was a deeply social person who truly loved connecting with others. He was known throughout the community as one of the kindest people you could ever meet—always willing to lend a hand, share a smile, or help someone in need. Generous and caring by nature, Dean believed in giving back to his community. At one time he spent many hours mentoring youth within the Coeur d’Alene Tribe.

Family meant everything to Dean. He stayed active with the tribe and enjoyed attending community gatherings and events. He especially loved going to pow wows and stick games. Dean also enjoyed spending time at the casino, often playing the machines alongside his beloved Auntie Wanda, sharing laughs and stories along the way.

Dean will be remembered for his warm heart, generous spirit, and the countless friendships he formed over the years. His kindness and genuine love for people touched many lives, and he will be deeply missed by all who knew him.

Dean is survived by his Auntie Wanda Matt of Plummer, Idaho; his brothers Donald Pakootas of Worley, Idaho, and Thomas Pakootas of Lovell Valley; several nieces and nephews; and his adopted “DeLorme” family. He was preceded in death by his parents and his sister, Wendy Pakootas.

A wake was held Friday, March 6, 2026, at the Evan Abraham Longhouse in DeSmet. A 7 Drum Service followed on March 7, 2026, with burial at Sacred Heart Mission Cemetery in DeSmet.
