Terry R. Swam Obituary
Terry R. Swam, 69, a nearly lifelong resident of St. Maries, Idaho, passed away on April 18, 2026, at Benewah Community Hospital, surrounded by his loving family.
Terry was born on January 26, 1957, in Spokane, Washington to Raymond and Linda Lee Swam. He spent his early years between Spokane and California before settling in St. Maries in the third grade. It was there that he built his life, attending local schools and graduating from St. Maries High School with the Class of 1976. While in high school, Terry worked at Napa Auto Parts for Ellis Vawter, Phillips 66 Carwash for Steve Bailey, the US Forest Service for Larry Weinmann, helping on the Mauro Dairy Farm, and bailing hay in the summers.
Following graduation, Terry began working for Regulus Stud Mills, Inc. as a laborer. Through hard work and dedication, he worked his way up to Headrig Operator, a position he truly enjoyed. In 1978, he welcomed his beloved daughter, Sonia, who remained the center of his world. In 1984, Terry’s life changed when he became ill, forcing him to leave the job he had taken pride in. Despite the challenges he faced, he continued forward with resilience, spending time both with family and living independently. In 2006, he moved to Valley Vista Care Center, where he received the additional care he needed.
Terry had a love for the outdoors and simple pleasures. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and especially cherished his Honda Odyssey, a single-seat, four-wheel all-terrain buggy that brought him great joy. He felt most at home in the woods and along the river, particularly at St. Joe Campground, where he loved fishing and enjoying his favorite fried chicken. Some of his most treasured memories were road trips along the St. Joe River with Sonia in his little blue pickup.
Terry was a man defined by his kindness and generosity. He loved people and never missed an opportunity to visit and connect. He would give the shirt off his back to anyone in need and found happiness in giving, whether it was a thoughtful gift or a simple piece of candy. He had a well-known sweet tooth and especially loved chewing gum. His heart was especially drawn to children—his nieces, nephews, and grandchildren—whom he adored. He delighted in playing board games with them and spending time together. Terry also enjoyed watching movies, particularly classic westerns, with John Wayne being his favorite.
Above all, Terry loved his family fiercely. Though his life held its share of struggles, it was also filled with love, laughter, and meaningful connections that left a lasting impact on those who knew him.
Terry is survived by his daughter, Sonia Swam of St. Maries; siblings Bill (Bonnie) Swam of Emida, Idaho, Diane (Jim) Lounsbury of St. Maries, Vickie (Gary) Schwartz of St. Maries, Dirk (Melissa) Mauro of St. Maries, and Angel (Mitch) Donohoe of Medimont, Idaho; bonus siblings Bill (Misty) Thomas, Chrissy (Dale) Asher, Debra (Scott) Thornbrugh, and Terrie Derry, all of St. Maries, and Jeanette Mauro of Post Falls, Idaho; his cherished grandchildren Chase, Aubrey, Aiden, Cora, and Owen Braz; along with numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents Raymond and Linda (Buchan) Swam and Donley Mauro Sr. and his brother Donnie Mauro Jr.
A Celebration of Life will be held on May 2, 2026, at 2:00 p.m. at the Elks Lodge. Terry will be laid to rest at Woodlawn Cemetery.
