Nancy A. VanVleet Obituary

Nancy Ann Wetsch-VanVleet (79), a longtime and cherished resident of St. Maries, Idaho, passed away peacefully at her home on April 18, 2026.

Nancy was born on November 29, 1946, in Dickinson, North Dakota, to Joseph J. Wetsch and Florence M. Edwards-Wetsch. She was raised in Dickinson, where she graduated from high school and began her career as a dental assistant for Dr. Oaks & Hansen—a role she took great pride in before beginning the next chapter of her life.

On April 29, 1967, Nancy married the love of her life, Robert VanVleet. Together, they shared 55 wonderful years of marriage, filled with love, laughter, and adventure. Their journey took them across several states, including North Dakota, San Diego, Montana, Alaska, and ultimately Idaho, where they made their home in St. Maries.

Nancy found joy in life’s simple pleasures. She loved reading and sewing, cheering on Gonzaga Men’s basketball and the New Orleans Saints, and she dedicated much of her time to her community. She volunteered during elections at the courthouse and served on the local library board in her earlier years.  Nancy’s working history started at Montana Dakota Utilities when they were putting in natural gas lines, Gambles Hardware Department Store, JC Penney’s, and she sold Avon. Once she moved to St. Maries, she became a familiar face at Mike’s Drug Store and Economy Hardware (True Value), where she formed many lasting friendships.

Above all, Nancy will be remembered for her kind and gentle nature. She was truly a “social butterfly,” known for her warm smile, easy conversation, and genuine care for others. Nancy had a way of making everyone feel seen and valued, always putting others before herself. Her big heart and thoughtful spirit left a lasting impression on all who knew her.

Nancy is survived by her sons, Joseph VanVleet and Charles (Tiffany) VanVleet; her beloved grandchildren, Devon, Christian, Landon, Phoenix, and Lillyanah; and her brother, John Wetsch.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Florence Wetsch; her devoted husband, Robert VanVleet; her daughter, Nicole VanVleet; her brother, Thomas Wetsch; her brother-in-law, Gary VanVleet; and her nephew, Shawn VanVleet.

In honoring Nancy’s wishes, no services will be held. Family and friends are invited to visit her online tribute and share condolences at hodgefuneralhome.com.
