John David Crane Obituary

John David Crane (60), a lifelong resident of St. Maries, Idaho, passed away peacefully at his home, and is now reunited with his beloved parents, William and Betty Crane, his dog, Chumley and cat, Headbanger.

John was born in St. Maries on April 1, 1966, a date his family never let him forget, as he proudly carried the title of their “April Fool’s Day baby.” He grew up in the close-knit community of St. Maries and attended school there, forming the roots of a life spent in the place he knew and loved best.

Before finishing his senior year, John stepped into the workforce, taking a job with Sindt Logging where he was responsible for delivering and maintaining supplies to logging camps. It was hard, honest work, and John took pride in doing his part. He later worked to Coeur d’Alene for a time, though the drive proved challenging, eventually leading him back home where he found a position at the Potlatch Corporation working in the guard shack. This role suited him well, and it became one of his favorite jobs, one where he felt comfortable and at ease, until health issues eventually made it difficult to continue working.

John lived life on his own terms. Though he grew more private over the years, he was content in his solitude and found peace in a quieter way of living. Those who knew him understood that behind his reserved nature was a sharp mind and a deeply thoughtful soul. He had an insatiable curiosity and loved to read anything he could get his hands on, especially westerns and mystery novels. He also had a remarkable artistic ability and could draw with impressive detail, a talent that brought him both joy and expression.

Some of John’s favorite moments were simple ones; cutting firewood with his cousin Joe, driving the backroads, fishing along the St. Joe River, or camping in the beauty of North Idaho. He had a loyal, small circle of friends he held close, and family meant more to him than words could fully express. He also had a deep love for music, especially the classic metal bands that defined an era; Ozzy Osbourne, KISS, and AC/DC, music that brought him energy, nostalgia, and happiness. John took pride in teaching his niece, Lesa, what “good music is” and brought her to her first rock concert, Alice Cooper, when she was 10! And if there was a football game on, you could count on John cheering for his Raiders.

During the flood of 1996, while many would have fled, John stayed upstairs in the family home and embraced the experience in his own unique way, a reflection of his resilience, independence, and quiet strength.

John’s life was not without its struggles, but he was deeply loved by those who knew him best. His family and friends will remember him for his intelligence, his individuality, his quiet humor, and the steadfast presence he was in their lives.

He is survived by his siblings, Lynda Crane of Spokane, Washington, and Jim (Helen) Crane of St. Maries, Idaho; his nieces, Lesa (James) Dunphy of Colville, Washington, Amy (John) Lunde of Sagle, Idaho, and Marcie (John) Morris of Mountain Home, Idaho; his nephew, Jerry (Courtney) Crane of Post Falls, Idaho; his aunts, Maureen Adams and Joanne Phillips, both of Spokane, Washington, and Shirley Burton of Lewiston, Idaho; an numerous cousins.
