Janette Marie Doherty Obituary

Janette Marie Doherty (78), a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and vibrant member of her community, passed away on May 3, 2026, at Benewah Community Hospital, surrounded by the love she so freely gave throughout her life.

Jan was born on February 19, 1948, in Colfax, Washington, to James and Eunice Getz. She was raised in Potlatch, Idaho, where she built lifelong friendships and graduated from Potlatch High School with the Class of 1966. She later attended the University of Idaho, continuing her education close to home.

Jan’s love story with her husband, Greg, began in a way that felt meant to be—a blind date arranged when her sister Janean’s boyfriend brought Greg along. Jan always said she knew right away she was going to marry him, and she was right. While Greg was in basic training with the U.S. Army, the two eloped, beginning a lifelong partnership built on love, adventure, and devotion. They were married on April 17, 1967, at The Hitching Post in Coeur d’Alene, Idaho, by the same reverend who had married her parents—a meaningful full-circle moment for their family.

Their early years together took them to New Jersey during Greg’s military service, where Jan stood faithfully by his side as they began building their family. Their daughter, Danyell, was born in Moscow, Idaho, and in 1968 Jan joined Greg overseas in Germany, where their son Ron was born. Eventually, life brought them back to Moscow, where they welcomed their younger children while Greg worked for the phone company and Jan devoted herself to raising their family with love and care.

As her children grew, Jan began working at the University of Idaho as a bookkeeper, where she was known for her dedication and friendly spirit. Later, Greg’s work brought them to St. Maries, Idaho—a place they quickly grew to love. They first settled into life there with Greg in a fifth wheel at Ed’s R&R, and eventually at The Big Eddy. In 2001, Jan joined him when they found their forever home on Shay Hill, where they built a life filled with laughter, family, and lasting memories.

Jan had a zest for life that was unmistakable. She loved bowling, camping, skiing, fishing, and spending time outdoors. She had a competitive and fun-loving spirit, whether she was playing bingo at the Eagles or enjoying a game of cards. She especially enjoyed shooting, with a particular fondness for black powder. Wherever she went, Jan brought energy, laughter, and a sense of belonging.

She was deeply involved in the Fraternal Order of Eagles for over 40 years, serving as a past president in both Moscow and St. Maries. Her commitment to the organization and her community reflected her generous heart and desire to connect with others.

Above all, Jan will be remembered for her love of family. She was the heart of her home—steadfast, caring, and always there when she was needed. She had a way of making people feel welcome, valued, and loved. Her warmth, strength, and spirit touched countless lives.

Jan lived fully, loved deeply, and left behind a legacy of kindness, resilience, and joy. She will be dearly missed by all who knew her, but her memory will continue to live on in the hearts of her family and friends.

She is survived by her husband Greg at their home in St. Maries; children Danyell Sheets of Pullman, WA, Ronald (Rene) Doherty of Paso Roblez, CA, Mikelle (Douglas) Revord of Moscow, ID, and Joseph Doherty of Moscow, ID; siblings Jacqueline Beaudry of Bayview, ID, Janean (James) Deatherage of Idaho Falls, ID, Paula (Lou) Babb of Spokane Valley, WA, Jamie (Rodney) Stewart of Rupert, ID, and James Getz of Lewiston, ID; step-siblings Christopher (Vickie) Curtis of Roy, WA, Mary Kingery of Missoula, MT, Debra Hart of Winchester, ID, JoAnn (Tony) Curtis of Marysville, WA, and Joanie Curtis of Vancouver, WA; 9 grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews.  She is preceded in death by her parents, stepmother JoAnn Getz, grandson Mikhail Burke, stepsisters Paula and Stephanie, and stepbrother Thomas.
