Dewey Franklin Spooner Obituary
Dewey Franklin Spooner, 90, longtime resident of St. Maries, passed away peacefully at home on May 15, 2026. Dewey, born January 15, 1936 in Davenport, WA to Joseph and Myrtle (Shinner) Spooner was the sixth of seven children.
At a young age the family moved to the Benewah, then Harrison, and finally St. Maries, when he was in high school. He graduated from SMHS in 1954 with his brother Donald, who sat out a year of school so the two of them could graduate together.
In November of 1954, he married Billie Jean Taisey. They began their family in 1955 with the birth of their daughter and added three sons over the following years. He loved the outdoors and was always taking the family camping and hiking. After the kids had all left home, Dewey and Billie spent much of their free time on horseback camping trips with friends. His working years were spent in the woods, Milwaukee Railroad, and running the river crane for Potlatch, from where he retired in 1995. He accomplished a long time dream of owning property on the St. Joe River. That became his and Billie's new focus, building a cabin and making a place for family and friends to gather for years to come.
Dewey is survived by his wife, Billie, daughter and son-in-law Shannon and Barry Badgett, son and daughter-in-law Tim and Jamie Spooner, all of St. Maries, and son Troy Spooner of Portland, Oregon. He is also survived by grandchildren Brianne (Lane) Watkins, Brandon Spooner, and Andrew Spooner, four great-grandchildren, Taci Watkins, Lyssa Watkins, Jaden Spooner and Hailey Spooner, sister Kay Sather, and numerous nieces and nephews. Dewey was preceded in death by both parents, brothers Robert Spooner, James Spooner, and Donald Spooner, sisters Margaret Spooner Barden, and Elizabeth Spooner Buell, his son Todd Spooner, and grandson Nicholas Spooner.
Dewey requested no services. The family would like to thank Carrie Nordin with Hodge Funeral Home who is in charge of all arrangements, and Jessica Lockridge for the personal car she provided for dad.
