William Leroy “Bill” Mason, beloved husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, veteran, farmer, and friend, passed away peacefully on July 25, 2026, at Hospice of Spokane. He was 91.

Bill was born on January 31, 1935, in Portland, Oregon, to loving parents. He spent his childhood in the Tualatin area and graduated from Benson High School with the Class of 1953. Soon after graduation, he proudly served three years in the Army National Guard while working for the Southern Pacific Railroad. In January 1957, he enlisted in the United States Air Force, serving approximately four years and being stationed at Geiger Field in Spokane, Washington.

While in Spokane, Bill met the love of his life, Wilma Fabricius, through family. The couple married in 1960 and began a partnership that would span 66 wonderful years. Together they built a life centered on hard work, family, and community.

Bill first worked for Spokane Transit before accepting a position with the United States Postal Service as a mail carrier, a career he faithfully devoted himself to for many years before retirement. Retirement, however, was simply the beginning of a new chapter. In the mid-1990s, Bill found his true passion when he began farming on the Fabricius family farm on the Harrison Flats. Although he and Wilma maintained their home in Spokane, they spent countless days on the farm and in the Harrison community, where they became familiar and well-loved faces. Bill continued farming until retiring in 2025.

In a small town, people are remembered not only for what they did but for how they showed up. Bill was one of those people. He and Wilma were longtime members of the Harrison Grange and the Harrison Senior Citizens Center, always willing to lend a hand, share a story, or simply be part of whatever was happening in the community. His steady work ethic, quiet kindness, and dependable nature earned him the respect and friendship of many.

When he wasn't working, Bill loved the outdoors. Some of his happiest days were spent fishing and crabbing along the Oregon coast, where he and Wilma kept a trailer and made years of treasured memories. Whether it was cutting firewood, working around the farm, or simply enjoying the beauty of nature, Bill was happiest outside.

Bill is survived by his devoted wife of 66 years, Wilma Mason of Spokane, Washington; his son, Dale Mason of Harrison, Idaho; grandchildren Matthew Johnson, Lynden Malek, and Andrew Johnson; great-grandchildren Eli, Noel, Johanna, and Eloise; and several cherished nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents; his son, David Mason; and his sisters, Elaine Nolan and Pat McManigle.

A celebration of Bill's life will be held in September, with the date and time to be announced.

Bill's life was a wonderful reminder that the strongest communities are built by ordinary people who quietly give their time, their talents, and their hearts. He will be deeply missed by his family, friends, and the Harrison community he loved so well.
