Obituary of Lloyd George Nicholson

Lloyd G. Nicholson (79) longtime St. Maries area resident died Dec. 14, 2016 in St. Maries, ID. He was born March 23, 1937 to Willis and Nora (Andrews) Nicholson in Moscow, ID. Lloyd’s parents purchased the Nicholson farm on Nicholson Mountain on the Palouse. Lloyd grew up on the Palouse and graduated from Palouse High School with the class of 1955. In high school he was a standout football player. Lloyd received a football scholarship and a music scholarship to Eastern Washington State; however a terrible car wreck that damaged his knee resulted in his career in football being cut short. The doctors told him he would never walk again, but he proved them wrong. Lloyd went to work in the woods and owned a small farm with his wife near Harvard, ID. In 1958 Lloyd met Lavere “Jodi” Winkle at the Elderado near Potlatch. They married June 6, 1959 in Coeur d’ Alene, ID. The couple made their home in Potlatch for a short time before Lloyd and Jodi sold their farm and they relocated to Brookings, OR where he went to work for South Coast Lumber Company. In 1972 the family moved to Alaska where Lloyd worked for a lumber company in Jackolof Bay as a sawyer. Farming was something that Lloyd enjoyed doing, so he relocated the family to St. John, WA where he started farming again. In 1975 Lloyd was hired by Potlatch Corporation as a Millwright and the family moved to St. Maries. He retired in 2000 after dedicating 25 years to Potlatch. On January 14, 2001 Lavere passed away. Lloyd kept himself busy by visiting friends up the Joe at the Big Eddy, St. Joe Lodge, and Calder. He also made his rounds in town visiting his friends. You would rarely catch him at home unless he wanted to watch a football game and not be bothered. He was pretty partial to the Green Bay Packers and completely disliked the Raiders. Although he really didn’t have a favorite team, you would catch him cheering on the Seattle Seahawks. Lloyd enjoyed watching old westerns and his most favorite past-time was riding 4 wheelers or taking a drive in the mountains with a cooler full of cold beer. Lloyd is survived by his children Jerry (Betty) Nicholson of Newman Lake, WA, Koreena (Bob) Stowell of St. Maries, ID, Kerry Nicholson of St. Maries, ID, Kelly Nicholson of Spokane, WA, Lowell Nicholson of Spokane, WA, and Kevin Nicholson of St. Maries, ID. Also surviving are his brother Delbert (Callie) Nicholson of Potlatch, ID, numerous grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his wife Lavere Joanne Nicholson, and siblings Don Nicholson, Ruth Hall, Velda Newton, Betty Hildebrand, and Delma Damen. A memorial service is planned for Saturday January 14, 2016 at 11:00 am at the Eagles Lodge in St. Maries. A gathering of family and friends to share a meal will follow at the Eagles. In lieu of flowers the family suggests donations to Hospice of North Idaho or St. Joe Valley Search and Rescue.
