Obituary of Phyllis Louise Herboldt

Phyllis L. Herboldt (85) resident of St. Maries, ID died at her home on January 10, 2019.  Her obituary was provided in her own words as she was a writer and author.  I was born Phyllis Louise Grow on March 20, 1933 at Grandview, WA to John and Thelma (Smith) Grow.  I lived there for the first part of my life, but moved to the St. Maries area and grew up here.  I married Arthur Louis Herboldt on March 18, 1951 in St. Maries.  I graduated from St. Maries High School in May of 1952.

My first son, Wayne Louis was born November 6, 1952.  Later on my second son Dale Arthur was born on March 3, 1954.  Cleona Carole was born April 25, 1955 and Lyla Jean was born May 11, 1956.  Arthur worked at the lumber mill in St. Maries and we lived on a 5 acre farm in Meadowhurst.

On November 23, 1956, Cleona died.  After the lumber mill burned down, we moved to Post Falls for 11 years.  We returned to the Harrison Flats area in September of 1983.

Arthur’s dad died June 3, 1990.  We moved in with his mother so we could look out for her.  Arthur still worked for John Hern Iron Foundry in Coeur d’ Alene, so he was still driving to and from work each day.  On his way to work on October 5, 1991, he was hit by a Purina Truck when it lost its trailer and hit Arthur’s car.  Arthur died as a result of injuries received in the accident.

We had started raising Red Angus cattle for the year before and with God’s help and my son Dale, I continued in the cattle business.  Those were hard and lonely months, but I survived.  About 10 months later, Neita decided she wanted to go to her daughter’s place in Portland, so she left me.

I was alone, really alone now, but again with God’s help and my son Dale, we made it with the cattle.  It was something to work at and we were successful.

I have one older brother James Edward Grow and 1 younger brother Larry Gail Grow.  They both live in Coeur d’ Alene.  I have a sister Kathleen Heibert who lives in Dalton Gardens, ID.  I lost one brother Benjamin Grow years ago and one sister Nancy Dokken.  Both my parents died in the 1990’s.

Arthur and I were married for 40 years when he was killed.  I have enjoyed raising cattle and looking after the baby calves.  I attend the Church of Christ in St. Maries and have been blessed with 9 grandchildren and 14 great-grandchildren.

My daughter and son in-law Lyla and Rob Gray live in Mica, WA, so I get to see her often.  My son Dale and wife Diane live close by, and he checks on me and the cattle twice a week.  Wayne and his wife Michelle live in Flagler Beach, FL.  I have chosen to be cremated.  A memorial will be held at Hodge Funeral Home on Friday January 18, 2019 at 11:00 am.  A gathering for family and friends will follow at the home of Dale and Diane Herboldt.
