June Pomerinke

Obituary of June L. Pomerinke

June Pomerinke, long time St. Maries resident, died of natural causes Feb 13, 2019, in St. Maries, ID.  The first of four children, June was born June 14, 1922, to parents Julius and Florence Schubach.   Her parents established a homestead near Pierce, ID, where she spent her younger years.   In 1930 they purchased land three miles from Orofino, ID, which became their permanent home.  June attended the Banner Elementary school and later graduated from Orofino High school.   She trained with the Civil Service in airplane instrument repair and worked at Spokane, WA, depot for a period of time during World War II.

After the loss of her first husband she married Floyd Pomerinke in 1949.  The family of six moved to the Flat creek area near St. Maries in 1952 to what they called their Lucky Day Ranch.

June was a homemaker who enjoyed family activities.   She was active in the area 4-H club for many years serving as an associate leader in sewing, cooking and crafts.  Among favorite family outings were camping trips on the St. Joe River, fishing on Benewah Lake and swimming in nearby lakes and rivers.

In 1961 she was hired by the St. Maries Sheriff’s department where she worked for over six years.

June became the family “historian” and saved memorabilia from past generations and kept family members updated through letters, diaries and photographs albums.  Several of her photos were featured in area calendars.  She actively participated in area style shows where her collection of vintage clothing was often used.

She wrote and published two family biographies and numerous short stories, articles and poems that were published in various magazines.

She was preceded in death by husband, Floyd; sister, Nadean Kubicek; and brother, Victor Schubach.

June is survived by a brother, William Schubach (Prudy) of Lewiston, ID; daughters, Janine Price (Shorty) of Troy, MT, and Wanda Bergland (Loy) of St. Maries; sons, Mark Pomerinke (Irene) of Quilcene, WA, and Tim Pomerinke (Casey) of Rathdrum, ID.

She is also survived by 12 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Per June’s request, no funeral service is scheduled but a Celebration of Life will be held later with date to be determined.  Memorials can be made to her favorite charity—Hospice for the local area.
