Obituary of George J. Bornitz

George J. Bornitz (83) longtime resident of Upper Black Lake area, near St. Maries, died February 15, 2013 at his home from Pneumonia. George was born March 29, 1929 to George H. and Bena (Schultz) Bornitz at Brookings, South Dakota. He grew up on a farm and went to a one room school near his home. He enlisted in the U.S. Army on Oct. 10, 1946 and spent one year in Sasabo, Japan. He was a Pfc and worked as a security patrolman with Co. K 34th Infantry. He was honorably discharged on February 24, 1948. He spent many years working in the oil fields in Oklahoma and Texas. He met and married Doris Hansen on August 29, 1953 at Faith, SD. They had five children. He continued working in the oil fields in North Dakota and Montana where he worked as a driller and roughneck. In 1963, the family moved to Idaho where George went to work as a Millwright first for Broadfoots Lumber Co, then Bilco and finally Potlatch. He spent several years at the Rutledge Unit of Potlatch in Coeur d' Alene until it was closed. He then transferred to the St. Maries Complex of Potlatch until his retirement in 1980. George loved hunting with his boys and going to their sporting events at school. His favorite hobby was making homemade wine and beer. George is survived by his wife Doris at the family home. Also surviving are his sons and daughters-in-law Dick and Linda Bornitz and Arden and Rita Bornitz all of St. Maries and son Lynn Bornitz of Colville, WA. His daughter and son-in-law Annette and Rod Black of Spokane, Wa, 15 Grandchildren and 16 Great grandchildren. George is also survived brother Edward Bornitz and sisters Alice Schmidt and Mary Jane Keuter of South Dakota. He was preceded in death by his parents and son George Jr. At George's request, there will be no funeral services.
