Obituary of Sandra Lee Haines
Sandra Lee Haines (Sandy) resident of St. Maries, Idaho passed away on May 16, 2020. She was born on June 26,1954 in San Jose, California to Fred and Margaret (Zamarripa) Haines, the second of five children. She moved with her family at the age of 10 to Harrison, Idaho. She graduated from Kootenai High School in 1972. She attended Kinman Business University. After completing the program, she moved to St. Maries and began a 44-year career with Potlatch Corporation as an executive assistant, retiring in 2018.
As the sole provider, Sandy always held a second job on the weekends. For sixteen years she worked at The Harrison Trading Company in Harrison, Idaho. When the store changed ownership in 2016, she retired. In the early 90’s she also bartended at Carlin Bay and the Gateway Resort, both on Lake Coeur’d Alene.
She enjoyed bowling and playing softball and was member of many leagues and teams. She was a member of the Nickelodeon sponsored team that won the 1980 St. Maries Softball Association Tournament. Her dark complexion earned her the nickname “Midnight”, which coincidentally was the approximate time of her passing. She was also a long-time member of the St. Maries Eagles Auxiliary and helped with various events.
Sandy always stayed active. Walking was her exercise of choice and she was incredibly proud of the many t-shirts and sweatshirts she accumulated throughout the years from participating in fun runs in many local and neighboring communities. Only illness prevented her from walking in her 34th consecutive Bloomsday. In recent years, she had taken up lap swimming at the St. Maries City pool every summer morning at 5am.
Sending cards and writing letters to family and friends were a staple in her life. Even as it got harder for her to write, she spent several hours typing out letters to keep in touch. Sandy had a huge heart and was always willing to donate or volunteer to the countless fundraisers brought to her attention by her grandchildren, nieces, nephews and friends. Over the years she was involved with The Girl Scouts, 6th Grade Resource Tour, and the St. Maries City Pool to name a few.
Sandy was extremely proud of her daughters and especially her four grandchildren who are all models in the Seattle area. Her oldest granddaughter, Ava, is signed with the Ford Modeling Agency.
She is survived by her daughters Jennifer (Trev) Lawrence of Port Orchard, Washington and Samantha Haines (John Graves) of Madison, Wisconsin, her grandchildren Ava, Myles, Case, and Grey also of Port Orchard, Washington. She is also survived by her mother, Margaret Haines, sister Midge Haines, brother Ray Haines all of St. Maries, sister Teresa (Tim) Kraack of Harrison and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her father Fred W. Haines and her brother Fred L. Haines.
A celebration of life will be held at the St. Maries Eagles Auxiliary on Saturday, July 18th, 2020 at 3:00pm. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be sent to The Sandra Haines Memorial Swim Fund or The Karen Ebert Memorial Scholarship Fund both at Potlatch #1 Federal Credit Union. Hodge Funeral Home has been entrusted with her arrangements. Her final resting place will be at the family plot at the Harrison Cemetery.
