Obituary of Marshall Martin Thorp
Marshall Martin Thorp Sr. (83) resident of Coeur d’ Alene, ID passed away at the Schneidmiller Hospice House on March 14, 2021. He is finally reunited with his wife Vicky. Marshall was born to Leonard and Margaret (Long) Thorp on May 22, 1937 in Duluth, MN. Leonard and Margaret moved from Minnesota to Idaho where Marshall attended schools in Moscow, ID and Cheyney, WA where his father was a professor and Margaret was a schoolteacher. Marshall was 2nd to the youngest of 4 children (Terri, Doug, Marshall, and Laurie).
Following graduation, Marshall moved around a bit, mostly in California. He went to work at General Electric Co. and a small cut stock pallet manufacturing company. He joined the California Highway Patrol in August of 1965 and patrolled the freeways of Southern California for 7 years.
Marshall met Vicky Burrell in Carlsbad, CA. They married on July 25, 1959 in Baldwin Park, CA. Vicky had a son from a previous marriage, David Allen Walker Thorp. Marshall adopted David and sadly he preceded Marshall in death 3 months before he passed. Marshall and Vicky had 2 other sons, Marshall Jr., and Douglas Anthony.
In 1972 Vicky and Marshall decided to start another chapter in their lives moving to Idaho. Marshall joined the Idaho State Police. They bought a place in Plummer, ID and planted their roots. They were longtime Benewah County residents living in Plummer, Rocky Point, and St. Maries. Marshall was an avid badge and patch collector and he enjoyed collecting model cars. He also traveled around designing several city and county uniform patches. In 2001 Marshall and Vicky moved to Coeur d’ Alene, ID, he later drove the City Link bus for 9 years. Vicky passed away in 2010 following a 7-month battle with lung, pancreas, and liver cancer. Marshall was a member of the U.S. Marshall Service out of Moscow, ID.
Marshall was a beloved father, son, uncle, brother, husband, and friend to nearly all who knew him. He had not one enemy and was a kind soul. He was a loving and generous man who will be missed by everyone.
Marshall is survived by his children Marshall Thorp Jr. of Denver, CO and Douglas Thorp of Coeur d’ Alene, ID; sister Laurie; and several grandchildren. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Vicky Thorp, son David Thorp, sister Terri Akmal and brother Douglas Thorp.
A Memorial Service to honor Marshall's life will be Saturday, May 8, 2021 at 1:00 pm at the Elks Lodge in St. Maries, ID.
