I'm so thankful for meeting the "other" Joe Martin. Holly had invited me from college to spend the weekend and it was about this time of year... and from Pullman to Idaho it was the most beautiful trip I'd ever driven. Howdy was my bartender (RIP, probably setting up a drink for Joe now!) and he refused my money saying, "if I take money from you for that beer being Holly's best friend, I might just get fired." Such a sweet gesture that he extended knowing how Joe felt about his family and I can't tell you how that simple gesture made me feel so loved by extension. Not much later that day Holly and I got to talking about her step-Dad Papa Joe... and I asked, "What's his full name?" "She said, "Joe Martin"... I said, "Well... that's MY step-Dad's name..." Holly said, "Huh..." I said, "What's he look like?" She said, "Well, he's balding..."
Me: Yup
Hol: He's got white hair
Me: Yup
We're both getting weirded out a bit...
Hol: He has a mustache...
...
Me: Yup
At this point we're convinced we are now related.
Hol: How old is he?
Me: In his fifties... (this was 1998)
Holy crap.
Hol: What's his middle name?
Me: James
Hol: Phew!!!
It took us a bit... but Joe had us going for a second. He would be known as "the Other Joe Martin" on all our annual Christmas cards.
Thank you, Joe... for your hospitality, for your beautiful home with the Smurf blue roof you could see for miles, for the fun bar that took you back in time, the trailer on the property, the paddle boat, and to my all-time favorite trips of family and friends... we love you, Shann. Take care of yourselves... we hope to see you soon. Best, The Duvall Family
