Obituary of Stephen James Matson Sr.
Stephen James Matson Sr. (74) resident of Emida, Idaho died Jan. 29, 2023 at his home near Emida. He was born January 27, 1949 to William and Margaret (Olsen) Matson at Moscow, ID. He grew up in Moscow and attended Moscow High School. Steve enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1967 serving one tour in Vietnam where he received the Purple Heart in combat. Other citations and awards were the Vietnam Service medal with two stars, Vietnam Campaign medal with w/60 Device, Vietnam Cross of Gallantry with Palm, Unit Citation and Combat Infantry Badge. Steve was very proud of his service to his country. He was Honorably discharged in 1970 at returned to Moscow.
Upon his return to Idaho after his discharge, Steve went to work in the Timber industry. He married Cindy Candler in 1971 at Moscow. He worked for various logging contractors in Latah Co as a sawyer. He was divorced in 1977.
Steve spent most of his life working for various logging contractors in Nez Perce and Latah Counties. He married Donna at the start of the new Millennium. She passed away around 2009. Steve moved to Emida shortly thereafter. Living near Emida, Steve ran his own firewood selling business. Anyone who knew Steve, knew that he was a free spirit and enjoyed partying and playing with his friends riding motorcycles. Steve loved his dogs. He had his own Zoo at his home caring for livestock and domestic animals. He loved his children and grandchildren.
Steve is survived by his son Jim Matson of Potlatch, daughter and son-in-law Jodi and Jody Pomponio of Fernwood, ID. His Brothers Ken (Marcia) Matson of Deary, ID, William Matson of Sandpoint, ID, Raymond (Kris) Matson of Moscow, ID, and Richard Matson of Cabo, Mexico. Also surviving are his sister Diane (Steve) Fiscus of Boise, ID and grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Donna and son Jeremy Matson Burris.
A celebration of his life will be held at a later date to be announced.
