Obituary of Douglas Fairbanks Chandler

Douglas Fairbanks Chandler Jr. (84) St. Maries, ID area resident passed away at his home on June 23, 2024.  He was born to Douglas and Geraldine Chandler Sr. on November 27, 1939, in Stockton, CA.  Doug grew up in the Stockton area and graduated from Stockton High School with the class of 1957.

Following high school, Doug worked as a Chef for Hofbrau in San Francisco for over 10 years.  He also served and trained in the U.S. Army Reserves.  Looking for change, Doug moved to Alaska where he managed LeRoy’s Pancake House for a few years, and then he returned to San Diego.  He met Mary Riley while he was working at Golf Crest Country Club.  The couple married in February 1976 at Chapel of the Valley in Spring Valley, CA.  Doug and Mary had daughter Deseree, and Doug went to work for Mercy Hospital in San Diego.  He worked in their Engineering Department for over 20 years before he retired.  Once he retired, in 2008 he and Mary moved near St. Maries to be closer to his sister.

Doug was a quiet and simple man who found joy in simple things.  He loved music and attending concerts.  He also enjoyed gardening, riding his 4-wheeler, and driving and tinkering on his old tractor.  He was a devoted family man who will be missed dearly by his family and friends.

Doug is survived by his wife Mary at their home; children Deseree and John Miller and Dale and Belva Post and 2 other children from a previous marriage; grandchildren Alyssa, Ryan, Emery, and John; siblings Don Chandler, Tara, Cindy, and Pat.  He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Bill Chandler, and his sister Helena Howell.

A celebration of Doug’s life will be at a later date.
