Ida Curley

Obituary of Ida Jane Curley

Ida Jane Curley (86) resident of Worley, ID passed away surrounded by her loving family on September 19, 2024.  She was born to Ernest and Ida Annie Catherine (Finley) Sorrell on January 6, 1938, in St. Ignatius, MT.  Ida attended school at Vila Urslines and Mullan, ID before she left school in the 8th grade to help take care of her younger siblings.  She went back to school and attended St. Ignatius High School.

Through mutual family friendships, Ida met Domnick “Sonny” Curley.  The couple dated for a few years before running off to marry on May 20, 1957, at the Hitching Post in Coeur d’ Alene, ID.  Sonny was serving in the U.S. Airforce, so Ida went to stay with his parents in Tensed, ID.  When he was discharged, they remained in Tensed for a little while before returning to Montana.

The Curley family moved around spending time in California, Missoula, MT, Evaro, MT and Arlee, MT.  During this time, she was a homemaker and often took in other children of her family.  While in Arlee, she established Ida’s Flower Shop and ran that business for several years.  She then moved it to Mission and ran it for a couple more years before closing.  She found joy in creating beautiful arrangements and putting smiles on the faces of her customers.  Although she closed up her shop, she still created arrangements out of her home.

Aside from running her flower shop and staying home to take care of her children, Ida worked at the Missoula Head Start and volunteered at Vista as an alcohol counselor in Spokane.  At that time the family had moved to Plummer, ID in 1980 and she made the commute to Spokane.  Later she moved to Worley, ID, spending 42 years in the home there.  She ended her career retiring as the Family Service Coordinator for the Coeur d’ Alene Tribe.

A phenomenal cook, Ida, was the best around.  Her specialties were huge breakfasts and huckleberry cakes.  She also loved playing BINGO and the machines at the casino. Elder trips around the Pacific Northwest visiting casinos were some of her favorite memories; however, her most favorite memories were made with her family.  She was a proud member of the Flathead-Salish tribe in Montana

Ida is survived by her children Alieene “Boom” (Ozzie) George of Plummer, ID, Marie (Arnold) Torosian of St. Ignatius, MT, Ida JR (Donnie) Gustin of Worley, ID, Joanna Curley of Worley, ID, Cliff Curley of Worley, ID, and Bob (Shelli) Curley of Worley, ID; siblings Eva (Reed) Anderson of St. Ignatius, MT, Gene (Anna) Sorrell of Rownan, MT, Joe Sorrell of Arlee, MT, Danny (Dorsey) Sorrell of St. Ignatius, MT, Gigi (Curtis) Yazzie of St. Ignatius, MT, and Judy Harlow of Pablo, MT; 19 grandchildren; 53 great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews; and her beloved rescued Pitbull Nikko. She is preceded in death by her husband Domnick “Sonny” Curley; child Antoine Stoney Curley; siblings Alice Ryan, Ernest “Rawhide” Sorrell, Jim “Bo” Sorrell, Wesley Sorrell, Karen Sorrell, Judy Sorrell, and Jenny Sorrell.

Ida’s final resting place will be the Saint Ignatius Catholic Mission Cemetery.
