Obituary of Bert Miller
Berton Lloyd Miller (85) longtime resident of St. Maries, ID passed away at Benewah Community Hospital on November 3, 2024. He was born to S.B. and Vivian Miller on November 30, 1938 in Pomona, CA. Bert grew up in Linwood, CA and graduated from Linwood High School with the class of 1957.
Following high school, Bert attended college for 1 year at Mt. San Antonio College. Deciding college was not for him, Bert went to work at Potlatch Corporation in California. He then enlisted into the U.S. Coast Guard where he served 4 years. In 1962 he married the love of his life Patricia Ambler. To support his family, Bert went to work at a sporting good store for a bit before working for General Dynamics for 5 years. Looking for a change, Bert enrolled into Cal-Polly where he earned a degree as a Horse Shoeing Ferrier.
In 1973 Bert and Pat moved to St. Maries, and he began shoeing horses. Over the years he held a few different jobs. He worked for 5 years at the Forest Service and spent 25 years working for the State of Idaho Transportation Department. Bert also had a few side jobs which he enjoyed; he coached volleyball for Plummer High School and served several years as a volleyball referee throughout Northern Idaho.
Devoted Christians, both Bert and Pat were members of the St. Maries Nazarene Church for years. He enjoyed volunteering for men’s breakfast and helping with the Upward and Win-1 programs. Bert was a simple man who enjoyed life. He was an avid reader, huge sports fan, and loved watching John Wayne movies.
Bert is survived by his wife Pat at home in St. Maries; children Scott Miller of St. Maries, ID and Shad and Marci Miller of Templeton, CA; sisters Cindy (Mike) Schultz of Santa, ID and Joanne (Richard) Alderton of Post Falls, ID; sister in-law Kay Miller of St. Maries; 3 grandchildren; 1 great-grandchild; numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, son Shawn Miller, brother Brick Miller, and sister Fay Cook.
Bert’s family appreciates Hospice of North Idaho, the staff at Benewah Community Hospital, our Nazarene Church Family, and our close friends, we are so thankful to all of you for the care you have shown our family and Bert.
A Memorial Service will be on Friday, November 15, 2024 at 11:00 am at the St. Maries Nazarene Church. A gathering of family and friends to share a meal will follow at the church.
