Obituary of Vernon S. Ducommun

Vernon S. Ducommun (86) lifetime St. Maries, ID resident, died March 22, 2014 at St. Maries following a several year courageous battle with cancer. He was born Feb. 20, 1928 to John and Jeanne (Jacot) Ducommun at St. Maries, ID. He attended schools in St. Maries and left school early to help his family operate their farm. Vern was asked by Uncle Sam to join his Army in 1946. He served a year in the Philippines. Following his honorable discharge in 1947, he returned home to work on the family farm. In 1948 Vern attended Dunwoody Trade School in Minneapolis, MN where he studied carpentry. After trade school, he returned home to work on the farm and for the St. Maries Lumber Company as a laborer. Vern married Patricia Lowry Sept. 1, 1950 at the Community Presbyterian Church in St. Maries. He then went to work in the woods for the Mueller Brothers Logging Co. In 1951, he worked as manager for the Courthouse Texaco Gas Station and worked with O.K. Rubberwelders Tire Co. Shortly, thereafter, he purchased the tire company. Vern and Pat started their family in 151. In 1953, Vern sold his business and went to work for the City of St. Maries in the maintenance dept. and a year later , Vern became a night police officer. At the end of 1954, Vern went to work for Potlatch Corp as a tireman on logging jobs. In 1962, Vern went to work for Hughes Heating and Electric where he learned the electrician trade and became licensed. In 1970, Vern went to work for the St. Maries Complex of Potlatch as an electrician and retired from there in 1990. After his retirement, Vern and Pat traveled, spending 16 seasons in the Southwest, primarily Yuma , AZ. He also enjoyed playing golf, carpentry, gardening and spending time with his family . Vern was a member and elder for 12 years of the Comm. Presbyterian Church. He was very involved in his church. Vern was also a member of the St. Maries Elk's and Eagles Lodges. Vern is survived by his wife Pat at the family home. His son's and daughters-in-law Loren and Doreen Ducommun of Deary, ID and Larry and Debbie Ducommun of Chico, CA., his daughter and son-in-law Lynn and Leon Marion of Beaverton, OR, 5 grandchildren and 8 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by brothers Wilfred and Lawrence Ducommun and sister Marjorie Scheidecker. Visitation will be Wed. March 26, 2014 from 1:00 p.m.to 5:00 p.m. and Thursday, March 27, 2014 from 8:30 a.m. to 9:45 a.m. at the Hodge Funeral Home. Services will follow at 11L00 a.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church with Pastor Nancy Goodwin officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery with Military Rites by American Legion Post # 25 and a gathering of family and friends will follow back at the Presbyterian Church. The family suggests memorials to either Hospice of Benewah Co.702 College Ave., or the Comm. Presbyterian Church 1100 College Ave., St. Maries, ID 83861.
