Obituary of Alma E. Martin
Alma Elizabeth Sofia Almquist Martin died at her home on April 18, 2014. She was 99 years old. She was born in 1914 to August and Wilhelmina (Lingren) Almquist. Alma attended and graduated from Mullan High School in Mullan, Idaho. She went on to the University of Idaho where she received her degree in Home Economics and Science. After graduating from college, Alma taught in Troy and Shoshone, Idaho and then at Bothel, Washington. It was at the U of I that Alma found her first and only love, Ron Martin. They were engaged in 1935 and married on June 23, 1940. When Ron was deployed during World War II, Alma taught home economics in Bothel, WA and Hailey, ID. After the war, Ron and Alma came to St. Maries (where Ron was from). Alma taught home economics at St. Maries High School in 1962 and 1963. Together they owned and operated several local apartment buildings. They purchased The Pines Motel in 1970, and retired from that business in 1975. Alma belonged to many organizations throughout the years including Mother's Club, Study Club, two bridge clubs, 4-H clubs, Camera club, and was Benewah County's campaign manager for the March of Dimes for many years. Alma will be remembered for her love of flowers and gardening. She was an amazing cook and loved to share her talent of baking with her five granddaughters. Alma was a caring, Christian woman who always thought of other's needs before her own. Alma is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Kathleen and Larry Guffey, her sons and daughters-in-law; Jim and Kathy Martin and Jerry and Beverly Martin. She is also survived by 5 granddaughters, 1 step granddaughter, and 12 great grandchildren. Alma's family is planning a private ceremony this summer.
