Obituary of May Leona Law-Stouffer

May Leona Law-Stouffer (91) longtime St. Maries resident and former County Treasurer died peacefully on August 21, 2014 at Valley Vista Care Center in St Maries, ID. She was born January 7, 1923 to Warren and Emma (Dart) Graham at Cutbank, MT. When she was 6 months old, the family moved to Edgemere, ID where she grew up. May Graduated from Spirit Lake High School with the class of 1940. Following graduation, she moved to Avery, ID to work in a local hotel. She married Earl Law on Oct. 9, 1940 at Wallace, ID. They made their home in Avery where May was a homemaker and had her first two children. She moved to St. Maries in 1945 and continued to raise her family and two more children were born. She worked in the 4-H program and helped her husband with his fur processing business. May also raised a garden and enjoyed canning the fruits of her labors. In 1957, May went to work for the Benewah Co. Assessor's office. In 1962, she took a hiatus from county government to finish raising her teenagers. She returned to the Assessor's office in 1965. May transferred into the Treasurer's office in 1968 when she was appointed to fulfill the term of Marguerite Pendell. She was elected that fall to the office. May retired as Benewah Co. Treasurer in 1978. Following her retirement, May and Earl enjoyed traveling to Why, AZ. She would help her husband with his trapping business. Her husband died in 1982. May married Sam Stouffer in 1985. They enjoyed being "snow birds" and traveling with their camp trailer. They enjoyed traveling and visiting friends and relatives. They served as camp hosts at the Maryhill State Park in Washington State. Mr. Stouffer died in 2001. May returned to St Maries in 2002 and lived with her son, Warren, until moving to Valley Vista Assisted Living in 2009. May attended the St. Maries Assembly of God Church. She was also a former member of the St. Maries V.F.W. Auxiliary and the BPW (Business and Professional Women's Assn. She enjoyed knitting, crocheting and embroidery. May is survived by her sons and daughters in law Albert and Eleanor Law and Warren and Linda Law all of St. Maries , her daughter Joan Poppino of Bonners Ferry, ID and daughter and son in law Sylvia and Dennis Kimzey of Hamilton, MT. Step-daughters and husbands Ann and Meril Craig of Aumsville, OR and Mary and Clifford Walter of Manzanola, CO. Also surviving are 13 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by brothers Guy, Norman, Leonard and Harry Graham and sisters Fern Wold, Rose Jones, June Dillion and Flora Elliot. Services will be Wednesday, August 27th at 11:00 at St Maries Assembly of God Church, 405 S. 23rd Street, Pastor Lynn Peters officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery with a gathering of family and friends following back at the church.
