Obituary of Mickey L. Walker

Maude L. "Mickey" Walker was born October 21, 1907 to Asel and Evalena (Cummins) Burnap at Touchet, WA. She grew up there and attended school there and graduated from Touchet High School with the class of 1923. In the Fall of 1923, she enrolled in Secretarial Science course at State College of Washington ( Now W.S.U.) She graduated in 1927 with at BA degree in Secretarial Science. November 1, 1927 she married Bernard "Bob" Walker whom she met as a freshman in college. They settled in Spokane where Mickey worked as a secretary and her husband managed a grocery store for a national chain. When the depression struck, they moved to the timber country. They logged in Northeast Washington until 1941 when they moved to the Benewah Valley were they built their home and brought up their children. Her husband continued to work in logging with a brief break during WW II when he worked in war construction and the family sometimes went along. After the war, the family came back to the Benewah and continued logging. Mickey managed the office and cooked for the crews in their various logging camps. She took over the job of secretary for the local Selective Service Board where she worked until the office was closed. She and her husband were involved in community affairs and were part of the founding members of the Benewah Valley Assn. She served on the original Board of Directors as secretary-treasurer. She was involved in Home Demonstration Club and was a 4-H leader for many years. She was a dedicated gardener and avid reader. She leaves an extensive library. She was a member of the Touchet Community Congregational church and the Benewah Bible Church. Her husband died in 1986. She is survived by her son Richard Walker and his companion Sharon Howe of Metaline Falls, WA and her daughter and son-in-law Janice and Gary Barichello of St. Maries. Also surviving are 4 grandchidren, Six great grandchidren and 2 great great grandchildren. Funeral Services will be Saturday , October 23, at 2:00 p.m. at Hodge Funeral Home with Pastor Spike Shine officiating. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery.
