Back in the 50's when Hazel and Rueben and their kids lived in the Benewah a dance was held on Saturday nights in the one room schoolhouse just down the road from their place.
When I went to pick up Bonnie for the dance she was all fixed up with a pretty dress and dancing shoes--and oh, that curly hair! But before we could leave Hazel reminded Bonnie that she had to milk the cow before she could go. Bonnie put up a fuss but Hazel stuck to her guns and so Bonnie and I picked our way through the barnyard (no place for dancing shoes) and the cow got milked before we went dancing.
Sticking to her guns was what Hazel did. "Work before play" was just one of the rules she stuck by. She made sure her kids learned to do their chores and keep their word as she herself sought to do all her life. Hazel showed us that it takes backbone to stand tall--and Oh she stood so tall. . .
