Obituary of Dorothy D. Johnson
OBITUARY Dorothy D. Johnson (102) St. Maries, ID resident, died Dec. 19, 2011 at St. Maries. She was born June 23, 1909 to Henry and Mamie (Fitzer) Dittman at Ferrell, ID. She grew up in the St. Joe Valley near Zane, ID at Trout Creek. She attended schools at Calder and Zane before going to St. Maries High School where she graduated with the class of 1927. She then attended Idaho State Teachers College at Lewiston, ID where she received her teaching certificate in 1930. She taught in one room school houses in Calder, Herrick, Marble Creek and St. Joe City. She also taught Civilian Conservation Corps. workers so they could achieve their 8th grade education. She met her future husband at a bridge party in Avery, ID where her he was stationed with the U.S. Forest Service. She married Al Johnson on Sept. 12, 1942 at Reno, NV They made their home at Spokane, WA before moving to Bremerton, WA. While living at Bremerton, she was involved with the U.S.O as well as worked for the Seattle Orthopedic Guild for Children as well as other children support organizations. Her husband died in 1967. Dorothy moved to Spokane in Nov. of 1974. She taught at the Barton School for Foreign Students teaching them English. She moved to St. Maries in 2001. Dorothy enjoyed traveling. She traveled to may countries in Europe and Asia. She also enjoyed her trips to Alaska to visit her twin brother David and sister Helen. She was an exceptional cook and loved music and playing the piano. Dorothy was a member of the Lutheran Church in Spokane , the Order of Eastern Star and Garden Clubs in Bremerton, WA and Spokane. Dorothy and her husband never had any children. She is survived by her sister Corrine Pierce of Zilla, WA and sister-in-law Mary Dittman of St. Maries as well as numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her twin brother David (Sonny) and brother Robert and Jack Dittman, her sisters Olive Farrell, Hazel Moe, Ruth Osier and Helen Berine. A celebration of her life will be held on Tuesday, December 27th at 11:00 a.m. at Hodge Funeral Home, St. Maries with Pastor Spike Shine officiating. Her wishes were to be cremated. She will be interred at Woodlawn Cemetery with her parents.
