Walt was the "baby" brother of my mother (Billie) and has always held a special place in our hearts. It was Walt who made a special point to keep in touch with his sisters' children, and we spoke with him often just to see how he "really" felt about politics and life in general. My wife Diane, our son Ryan. and I had a wonderful visit with Walt and Bettye for a week in late July. During our visit, after enjoying many hours of playing cribbage and listening to Walt's stories of days long gone, we had to leave, not knowing that would be our last hug from our dear uncle. Never losing his sense of humor, when we called us the morning of September 11th, he told us "Don't pay the ransom, I got out". He, of course, was talking about getting out of the hospital, but I have to believe now he has also "gotten out" of the misery of watching what is occurring in the country that he loved and was so proud to serve. He will be forever in our hearts and memories. Thanks, Walt, for always making us smile, and rest in peace. We love you dearly.

When I think of my wonderful childhood memories, Walt is part of it. He has been a close family friend since I was 5 years old. I will never forget our vacation in California and Walt and Faye taking us all around. He entertained us for hours with his stories and humor every time we saw him. I'll miss him and I am so happy to have known him. Condolences to Mike and David and Bettye.
