Obituary of Nadine Manning
M. Nadine Manning (87) passed away on September 10, 2015 at Hospice House of North Idaho in Coeur d’ Alene, ID. She was born May 30, 1928 in Newell, SD, the youngest of five children born to George W. and Mary Edith Bennett.
Nadine moved with her family to St. Maries when she was 3 years old. She graduated as Valedictorian from St. Maries High School in 1946. She first worked as a bookkeeper for McLaughlin Motors and then as a telephone operator in St. Maries.
Nadine married Raymond Manning, a meat cutter for Mosley’s IGA, on March 11, 1950. Together they had 3 children. In 1960 they opened their own custom meat cutting shop “Ray’s Meats” in the building that is now the Red Barn. Nadine worked behind the counter and was a bookkeeper for the business. They sold the business in the late 1980’s and retired.
Nadine was active in the 7-Star Rebekah Lodge in St. Maries for over 60 years and was a past Noble Grand of the organization. She also was a Bluebird/Campfire girl leader for several years.
Nadine enjoyed knitting and crocheting, gardening, cats, boating, birdwatching, and dancing. Ray and Nadine often went to dances at the Kellogg Senior Center. They traveled annually to Weiser, ID to attend the Old-Time Fiddlers competition and to Butte, MT for several International Folk Festivals. The couple also enjoyed traveling to the Oregon Coast and they took frequent drives up the St. Joe. You seldom saw Nadine without Ray.
Nadine is survived by her sons Michael Manning of Chicago, IL, Wilson Manning of Lancaster, CA, and daughter Wanda (Jeffery Herbert) Manning of Medford, OR. Also surviving are grandchildren Erica Smith, Zachary Manning, and Jacob Manning, her sister Laurabelle Gossage of Federal Way, WA, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband Ray, sisters Georgene Shamel and Emeogene Titus, and her brother George Bennett Jr.
A celebration of life is planned for October 10, 2015 10:30 am at the Community Presbyterian Church in St. Maries.
