To all of Randy’s family . . .
I am so sorry for your great loss of a wonderful human being.
I was shocked and deeply saddened by the news of Randy’s sudden passing . . . and very surprised how deeply he had touched our hearts having known him only as the ‘gopher guy’. During these many years, Randy displayed wonderful qualities. He was a gentle soul, kind, giving, considerate, and playful – and a perfectionist at his trade. He always wanted to show me his ‘catch’ – or was it to see my distorted grimace meaning “NO”.
About a year and a half ago when the Master Gopher man came here to do his job, he told me that he was getting too busy and needed a helper. My grandson, Scott, became his willing apprentice, and Randy took him under his wing and taught him all the tricks of the trade, and then some. They developed a really nice relationship.
I admired Randy. He was one of those people who seemed comfortable in his own skin, happy with life . . . and eager to experience more. During one of his visits, he told me about taking up piano.
Randy always spoke so endearingly about his family and his dear Mom - and secretary!
I regret that my Grandson has lost this special relationship with such a good, decent man. I imagine Randy would have been one of his mentors.
The photo is my Grandson’s 1st catch here at our home. It was a meticulous job just like Randy’s . . . and a quick catch. My Grandson wants to continue Gophers R Us in Randy’s honor.
I will always remember Randy’s gentle spirit and yet . . . what an adventurer!
We will surely miss Randy. I am reminded of something I read years ago: We can never know the full effect that one person has had upon the world. We only know how deeply our own hearts have been touched.
My heartfelt sympathies go out to you all.

Dear Randy's family,
I was shocked and very saddened to learn of Randy's passing. I had seen him less than a week before and he was very excited to getting back to Idaho for a few months of outdoor living. I met Randy a few years ago when I had a mole problem. My family and I took an instant liking to him. He was super warm, a gentle heart, always willing to give you the time of day, and he had the most remarkable stories. I am very busy and work from home, but I always found myself taking breaks when Randy came around just to shoot the shit. He will be fondly remembered in our household.
My deepest sympathies to you,
Scott

I met Randy only a year and a half or so ago, after my hip replacement and my discovering that gophers had been killing many of my succulents. I interviewed numerous gopher exterminators before meeting Randy. Told him I wanted someone willing to teach me the details and tricks of his trade - while doing the job. He said get your dog and knee pads and hop in the truck. We've been trapping and swapping hunting and fishing stories off and on since that day. Some of those days were among the most meaningful of my life. Randy was an inspiration to me, both as an adventurer and explorer, and as a still-growing family man, and friend. He was always willing to learn, and to teach. Randy had a gopher business-client base of five to six hundred people; they're going to miss his critter-removal services sorely, but they're going to miss his heart, character, and kindness much more. He was a very good man.

Fair winds and following seas Randy -
"As I walked past the dockside one evening so fair
To view the still waters and take the salt air
I heard an old fisherman singing this song
Oh take me away boys my time is not long
Wrap me up in my oilskins and jumper
No more on these docks I'll be seen
Just tell my old shipmates I'm taking a trip mates
I'll see you someday on Fiddler's Green
Fiddler's Green is a place I've heard tell
Where sailormen go if they don't go to Hell
Where the weather is fair and the dolphins do play
And the cold coast of Greenland is far, far away
Wrap me up in my oilskins and jumper
No more on these docks I'll be seen
Just tell my old shipmates I'm taking a trip mates
I'll see you someday on Fiddler's Green
Where the sky's always clear and there's never a gale
And the fish jump on board with a swish of their tail
Where you lie at your leisure and there's no work to do
And the skipper's below making tea for the crew
Wrap me up in my oilskins and jumper
No more on these docks I'll be seen
Just tell my old shipmates I'm taking a trip mates
I'll see you someday on Fiddler's Green
And when you are docked and your long trip is through
There's pubs and there's clubs and there's lassies there, too
Where the girls are all pretty and the beer is all free
And there's bottles of rum growing off every tree"

Randy, my most special friend. My eternal brother. I really miss you, man. At the same time, I rejoice that your new life has begun and that once I join you, we will have unbroken fellowship.
In your place, so many memories born at Miramonte live on - great times that you were the center of that I can replay more easily and vividly than popping in a dvd and watching my favorite movies for the seventh time, loving each one like I did the very first time I saw it. The "Night of the Deer Head", "Exploring the Depths of the Caldecott Tunnel", "Free Movies at the Orinda Theater", "The Dissection of Eurethra Franklin", "The Best Tardy Slip Excuse or 'Because Class Started Before I Got There", "The Stenciled Egg on Moraga Driveways" and countless others that I can relive and share with others who were there.
Randy, I know that before you left, you would have said goodbye to each of us if you could have. Yet, today, we all salute you for a full life well lived. You are no longer with us, but our love for you will forever stand in that special place in our hearts in which only you can fill.
Bon Voyage, my dearest friend.
Always, Garth Michaels

Please accept my sincere condolences to the family and friends of Randy who I was proud to call my friend. I remember especially a great road trip we made many years ago where Randy and I and our friends travelled to Oregon, Washington and Idaho. This was the occasion when Randy bought his property in Idaho.
Greetings to his mother, Peter and Kathy. I was deeply saddened at his death but I have great memories of him and of our younger days.

I'm very sorry to hear of Randy's sudden passing. As the little sister of Geoff Guerin, one of Randy's BFFs, I had the biggest crush on him. He was so dreamy as a teenager & not having seen him in person since then, I will always remember him that way. Rest in peace, dude.

My best friends passing caused the biggest void in the Force that mankind will ever know! Randy "Randello" was not only my best friend but a brother, mentor, tutor, and comrade! We became close friends in high school, lived a few blocks from each other and enjoyed life to its fullest. I know he's with his dad & son either fishing or sailing the great blue skies! I love and miss you bro! P.S. The fish "slipped" away, I did NOT just drop it!!!!! P,S.S. The gophers & moles will finally sleep in peace!

Randy was my neighbor in Walnut Creek for 8 years and was a friend for every minute of that and for the past year since we moved. He was a kind and considerate soul who always met me with s smile and made me smile in the process. He always had great stories about his adventures that he shared with me as I sat beside him while he set gopher traps in our garden. I know he cared very deeply for his Mom and his children. He never failed to mention them when we chatted. I will miss Randy and I will miss our chats about everything from piloting to fishing and from motorbikes to the moles who tried to elude him along the way.
Rest in peace Randy. You travelled far and achieved more than most in this life. Your friend, Jim.
