Obituary of Ramona Jane Altman

Ramona Jane Altman (80) resident of St. Maries, ID passed away peacefully on December 6, 2015. Ramona was born in Idaho Falls, ID on May 14, 1935 to Alfred and Ruby (Anduss) Wynn. In 1941 Ramona moved with her family to California and returned to the Grangeville, ID area in 1945. She attended school in Grangeville. When Ramona was in high school, she met Herb Altman in Mt., ID. They were married on December 3, 1953 in McCall, ID. Ramona went on to graduate from Grangeville High School in 1954. Herb was in the Navy and became a logger. Herb and Ramona made their home in Grangeville and started a family. They moved to Oregon for a short time and then returned to Grangeville for several years. In 1962, Ramona with her husband and children moved to Saltese, MT. In 1968 Ramona and the family moved to St. Regis, MT. Years later in 1978 the logging industry brought Ramona and her family to the St. Maries area. In the mid 1980’s after her children were grown and her husband Herb was forced to retire due to a logging accident, Ramona and Herb returned to St. Regis, MT. Herb passed away in 1993. Ramona returned to St. Maries to be closer to her children. Ramona was a loving person who spent her life being a wife, mother, grandmother, sister, and friend to many. She was a homemaker. She once worked for the U.S. Forest Service planting trees. In the 1960’s Ramona worked at the Montana Bar in Saltese, MT and the $10,000 Bar & Gift Shop in Haugan, MT. Later on Ramona worked for Jasper’s in St. Regis, MT and the Mineral County Hospital in Superior, MT. She retired in 1993 when her husband Herb passed away. Ramona loved the outdoors and all it had to offer. She enjoyed hunting and fishing. Ramona was an avid mushroomer. People would visit her often so she could share her knowledge. One of her greatest passions was gardening. She had an unbelievable green thumb and grew anything from fresh vegetables for the family to a huge assortment of beautiful flowers. She also enjoyed crocheting, knitting, and sewing. She crocheted many Afghans for her grandchildren and other family members. Ramona had another amazing talent which was painting. She painted several beautiful pictures over the years. The thing she enjoyed the most was spending time with her children, grandchildren, and visiting with family and friends. Ramona is survived by her children, son Harold and Nancy Altman of Silverton, OR; son Gene (Swede) and Marigay Altman of Moscow, ID; daughter Melody and Ulisses Carrillo of Laredo, TX and daughter Kathy and John Herzog of St. Maries, ID. She is also survived by her brother Ray Wynn of Estacada, OR; her sister Alta Crane of Coeur d’ Alene, ID; sister in-law Sharon Cunnington of Clarkston, WA; 13 grandchildren, 25 great grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews. Ramona was preceded in death by her parents Alfred and Ruby Anduss, sister Dora Wynn, husband Herb Altman, sons Allen Altman and Jack Altman, and grandson Ricardo Carrillo. A memorial service is planned for Friday December 18, 2015 at 2:00 pm at Hodge Funeral Home in St. Maries, ID. A gathering of family and friends to share a meal will follow at the Senior Meal Site in St. Maries, ID.
