Obituary of Sarah Mason

Sarah Mason (90) longtime resident and businesswoman of St. Maries, ID passed away on January 3, 2016 in Coeur d’ Alene, ID. She was born to Henry and Eliza Straub in St. Maries, ID on August 12, 1925. Sarah grew up in St. Maries and graduated from St. Maries High School with the class of 1943. Following high school, Sarah worked as a bookkeeper for her father’s business Straub, Inc. She married Carl Mason on April 6, 1946 in St. Maries, ID. The couple purchased Stafford’s Service Station and Cabins (now known as the Pines Motel). They built the first 8 units of the Pines Motel. They sold the motel in 1958 and purchased Benewah Distributors. The couple ran Benewah Distributors for 10 years selling it in 1968. Sarah worked as a bookkeeper from 1968 to 1977 for Chase Chevrolet, Ed Mueller Car Sales, and Valley Vista Care Center. In 1977 the Mason’s purchased Davis & Link. Sarah’s husband Carl passed away in 1979. Sarah sold Davis & Link in 1994 and retired. During her retirement she loved playing bridge with “The Dirty Nines” and Entre Nous Bridge Club. She loved her grandchildren and spending time with them. She was also a member of the Paul Bunyan Days Committee and for several years she entered a Davis & Link Outhouse into the races during the Paul Bunyan Day celebration. Sarah is survived by her daughter Brook Mason and son-in-law Robert Magera from Seattle, WA, 3 grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, brothers Victor Straub and Hank Straub, and sisters Clara Erickson, Rachael Knopp, Leah Frame, Joyce Straub, and Martha Mercer. A memorial service is planned for Saturday January 23, 2016 11:00 am at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church with Pastor Greg Worch officiating. A gathering of family and friends will follow at the Church.
