Obituary of Sylvia Shields

Sylvia Dorothy Shields (85) resident of St. Maries died at Hospice House in Coeur d’ Alene, ID on March 18, 2016. She was born to William and Sylvia (Fredericks) Jacquel on September 10, 1930 in West Milford, NJ. Sylvia grew up in Hewitt, NJ and in 1947 she married John L. Shields. The couple started their family right away. Sylvia went to work for RCA assembling tubes; however she left that job to take care of her children and her home. In 1961 Sylvia enrolled in beauty school. After she completed her schooling, she was a beautician for 3 years in New York. The couple moved to Virginia and Sylvia started waitressing. In 1980 Sylvia and John relocated to Charleston, SC where she became an apartment manager. In 1989 she retired and traveled for 2 years before moving to Interlachen, FL. John died in 1996, so she spent the next 20 years moving around between her childrens homes. She most recently lived in Nevada; however her son John passed away, so she relocated to St. Maries, ID to live with her son and daughter in law Bill and Dorothy Shields. In Sylvia’s retirement, she enjoyed crafts, knitting, crocheting, cross stitch, quilting, and attending craft shows with her creations. Her family would look forward to receiving her creations as gifts. She made covers for every appliance you could think of including vaccuums, plungers, toasters, and mixers. Sylvia is survived by her son and daughter in-law Bill and Dorothy Shields of St. Maries, and her daughter and son in-law Cindy and Ron Suggs of Summerville, SC. She is also survived by her sisters Mary Vreeland of Ocean City, MD and Doris Gleason of Doylestown, PA; 4 grandchildren, 3 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents, her husband John L. Shields, and her son John L. Shields Jr. She is also preceded in death by her two brothers, William C. Jacquel and Ernest R. Jacquel, and a sister, Helen P. Koehler.
