To the Ron Hill Family
I have to tell you Ron and I became friends of all places the one and only "Slab Inn" of Post Falls Idaho. I have to laugh as the bar is L shaped so the bar stools on the corner were the place to be for a couple Love starved bachelors to have a full view of the dance floor and the ladies that came to dance and after 2 or 3 beers we danced and danced many nights away and of course we both thought we were the best dancers there!!!!!! I met my second wife "Theresa Montpetit" at the Slab in as I was a builder by trade I built Ron;s Afram house as just enjoyed my times with Ron.
Want to thank you Troy for sending his obituary I will always have fond memories and some day I will say high to Ron in Heaven. Thanks again "LES"

I am sorry I couldn’t make it up for the Celebration of Ron’s life but I know if I had, I would have heard one great story after another involving Ron! I was lucky enough to have known Ron for most of my life through sports with his boys. The Ron I knew had different ways to keep you on your toes, whether it was as your coach or as your best friend’s dad or just your fellow hunting partner in the field. He would use his ultra-competitive personality to drive you as an athlete or have you guessing (followed with laughter) as he uses some of his dry deadpan humor as he is pranking you and you don’t even know it. While growing up with the family, I had the opportunity to receive it all with both barrels!
If you played for Coach Hill as one of his players, you probably remember the nickname he gave you after just a couple of practices…. Some were logical and some you have no idea where he came up with it….but it usually stuck and without a doubt, he would always refer to you by his infamous nickname…logical would be Lance Vaughn as “Sir Lance A lot” and no idea would be Tory Miran as “Mermaid”…..LOL! ONLY he could come up with a name like that and have always been happy to embrace it! He also had some of the greatest references for something an athlete was able to do that you could never see until he mentioned it…in fact, my mom still brings up the time Ron referred to my older brother Mark as he was running the bases, “Wow, he runs just like a Thoroughbred!!”
One summer (’84 I believe), Ron coached the Kuna Babe Ruth baseball team with a misfit bunch including Troy, Sir Lance A lot, & Mermaid amongst many others! We all wanted to win the league championship so Coach Hill could have the chance to coach our Tri-County All-Star team that would be made up of kids from Kuna, Vallivue, Emmett, Wilder, and Marsing. The year before our 13 yr. Prep Babe Ruth team had a very successful season winning the Idaho State Championship. Unfortunately, we just lost out to Vallivue Babe Ruth so their coaches were selected as the All Star coaches for the summer. The only problem was, it was a very quick All Star season because we practiced a ton and then lost our first two games in the District tournament…. Here our team was supposed to win the Idaho State Championship and have a chance at even a birth into the Babe Ruth World Series…..and we were 2 and a BBQ in Districts!! At that time, I can speak for everyone when we were all burnt out of baseball and did not want to even think about playing over the rest of the summer!
Then, after about a 3 week break, Mr. Coach Ron Hill Sr. took it upon himself to try and rally our All Star team back up for one more chance to play together and prove that we were better than what we had shown weeks before during the District meltdown! Coach Ron always knew that we could play with anyone in the state and he came across an open Babe Ruth tournament in Buhl, Idaho that had some of the top teams that had just competed in the state including the State Champions, Minico Babe Ruth, who were crowned just a week before. Ron believed and told us that should have been our Championship and now we have a chance to prove it by going head to head with the champs.
Now this all sounds easy to do, however, it was a fire drill trying to call all of the players to get them to play, get the parents on board with starting the team back up, getting uniforms back out, and gather all of the kids, their egos, and part of their summer aside to play ball together for just one more week! Once Ron (as well as Troy and I and others recruiting others) had a chance to form a team, it was too late to get any hotel rooms in Buhl. This was probably the best thing that could have ever happened to us as young ballplayers but most important young men! Ron, had the idea of camping out in the city park for the week in tent and setup our own little oasis… No Hotel room, No TV, of course No Internet….just a bunch of kids that love the game of baseball, have new life toward the game thanks to MR. COACH RON HILL, now we can bond over endless Wiffle Ball games and getting in trouble by being to too loud and staying up all night! Awesome!
Well, the whole week went as planned by Coach because we went undefeated throughout the tourney and had a date in the championship game with State Champ Minico. I can honestly say, it never crossed our minds that we would ever lose to the State Champs. Coach Ron had so much confidence in us and our ability to step up to the challenge that there was no doubt it was destiny. We were not going to lose like we did in Districts but more importantly, we were NOT going to lose because Coach Ron brought us back from nowhere when we least expected it and was giving us an opportunity to redeem ours with a second chance! We played hard, we played hard for HIM, and we beat the reigning Idaho State Babe Ruth champions that day under the guidance of Mr. Coach Ron Hill Sr. I can’t remember the score but I should because Coach Ron let me know how and by how many we beat them by that day with a huge shining grin! The funny thing is, I knew his shit ass grin and chuckle every time he brought up the game and score had to do that much more than the game itself. It had everything to do with the opportunity to present a challenge to us as young men and ballplayer and see if we could pick ourselves up and rise to up to the challenge in the face of all of the people that doubted us and wrote us off. To the teams in the tourney who were still wondering who this team was living in the park, playing wiffle ball all night and causing “some” disturbances within the community.. J And most off, his competitive juices absolutely loved the fact that the State Champs had to respect the “kids from the park” who just came into town on a last minute whim, with a pieced together team, with unwashed uniforms, and took them down! Thank you again Coach Hill…
We will all miss you Mr. Ron Coach Hill Sr., however, we all know you have already told this story to the Man Up Stairs, only you included every detail I left out or couldn’t remember, including the “Score”! J Love and miss you!

Ron and I played basketball together at MVCC and we always had a good time. We played with several good players and our coach was Bob Thomas. Ron was always enthusiastic and a joy to be around. I moved to California in 1964 and we last touch of each other until 2014. We were going to meet at the MVCC reunion, however, Ron was not able to be there. I was hoping he would be there this past August as we had a lot to get caught up on. You have my deepest sympathies as he was a great person and I enjoyed the years we spent together at MVCC.

I consider myself a lucky man to have been hired by Ron. I got to know a great guy and educator. What an impact he left wherever his journey took him during his career.
During the mid 80s he used to ref our basketball games when I was in school in Mtn. Home. He always let you know right where you stood, back then as a player and as one of his employees later in life. So blessed to have enjoyed his friendship and advice over a cold one on his deck after he retired.
Godspeed to you, Mr. Hill, and thank you!!

When I was in grade school at Kootenai, Ron was our principal (later the Superintendent for the school district). He was always a fair person and a friendly face.
Luckily, I didn't visit the principal's office frequently, so I only knew him in passing and at recess once in a while.
He did a lot for the Kootenai school district over the years.
Sorry for your loss.

Hill family,
I wanted to take a moment to tell you all how deeply sorry I am about Ron passing. Although I hadn't seen him in a couple of years I always tried to phone him once in a while as he was a very good friend to myself and my daughters. I will always appreciate him taking time to help teach me to hunt and allowing both my daughters to hunt turkeys at his place in Harrison.
Due to prior appointments we will not be able to attend the open house although we will be thinking of you all.
Our sympathies,
John and Brianna Nelson
