Mrs. Welch was one of the most respected and admired teachers I ever had, actually number one. She was fair and strict, a mother-like figure who I will remember with great fondness all of my life. I didn't realize she was a pilot. What a small world. Dave Rosen-Cascade, Idaho

I was so saddened to learn of the loss of Mrs. Welch. She was an inspirational teacher to the hundreds of children who passed through her classes. She also was - as they say in the south - "spicy." Mrs. Welch was passionate and vibrant and instilled that in her students and athletes. I know she will be dearly missed, but what a mark she made in so many lives! My sincerest sympathy to her family and friends.

It is with a heavy heart we send our sincere sympathy to all her family. We were friends for years in the dog family. Many of her dogs came from my dog family. Fred took us for our first flight in their small plane. My husband will never forget it. We lost touch but have always remmebered our friendship . God Bless. We would love a memorial card.

Mrs. Welch was my Jr. High English and Reading teacher, as well as my coach for 7th and 8th grade basketball. She was so formidable and fierce on the court that she seemed much taller. I remember "I don't care if you are 7 feet tall, I want you to JUMP for those rebounds!" which I thought of and often repeated whenever I saw a "flatfoot" on the court. She was one of those rare, truly dedicated teachers that, fortunately, our town has been blessed with. She was so excited about her new house and I was really looking forward to having her for a neighbor. Generations of students will never forget her hard work and willingness to go the extra mile, as well as her relentless pursuit of getting her students and team to "do their very best." Our thoughts and prayers are with her family and friends as they cope with heartbreak and loss of a great lady. Sincerely, Debra (Hanley) Boller, class of 1987 St. Maries

I was saddened to read about the death of Mrs. Welch. She was one of those teachers, that even after 30+ years, still speaks to me. I have so many fond memories of her classes. I even learned how to play chess during Jr. High English class. When I would return to SM for a visit and run into her, she always remembered who I was and lingered long enough to chat and catch up with me. She was truly a caring individual and the community will miss her.
