Obituary of Violet Laverna Lyng

Violet Laverna Lyng (78) resident of Santa, ID , died November 25, 2012 at her home at Santa following a courageous 3 year battle with lung cancer. She was born February 14, 1934 to Phillip and Ada (Collins) Granier at Stites, ID. She grew up at Wallace, ID and attended schools there. As a young girl , she worked as a "Candy Striper" for the East Shoshone Hospital at Wallace. She married Terry McGovern in 1950. They had two children, Mike and Carl McGovern. She married Henry Watts in the mid-1950's and they made their home at Butte, MT for two years before returning to North Idaho. They had four children together, Kaulene, Kelly, Kathy and Bill. During this time she was a homemaker spending her days taking care of her children. In 1961 they divorced and she was living in Hayden, ID. She worked at various jobs to support her family. She lived in Prineville, OR for a time and worked in local area restaurants. In 1980, she moved to White Sulfur Springs, MT. She married the love of her life Frank J. Lyng on Sept. 6, 1981 at Winnemucca, NV. They made their home at White Sulfur Springs. In 1985 she and Frank moved to Weston, OR where they owned a tavern for one year before moving to Missoula, MT. They lived in the Meridian/Nampa, ID area from 1990 to 1999 when they moved to their property near Santa, ID. Verna enjoyed feeding her deer, gardening , cooking and canning. Verna had many loveable nick-nanes given to her by her family, Violet, Verna, Vernie, Aunt Nernie and Nana. She was known to be loving, kind, caring and always willing to help anyone who needed it. Everyone was important in Verna's heart especially her children and family. She was loved by many. Verna will be missed here on Earth, but heaven has gained an Angel. Verna is survived by her husband at the family home. Her daughter and son-in-law Kaulene and Boyd Bower of Meridian, ID, sons Carl and Mike McGovern of Santa, Id, Bill Watts of Cataldo, ID. Her step-son Rick Lyng of billings, MT, Step-daughters Dawn Haley of White Sulfur Springs, MT, Debbie Frost and Frankie Spritzer both of Townsend, MT. Verna is also survived by brothers Carl Griner of Kamiah, ID and Ike and Royce Griner both of Baker City, OR as well as sisters Vonda Woods of Horseshoe Bend, ID and Ronda Reed of Baker City, OR. She is also survived by 31 grandchildren and 39 great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by daughters Kelly DeFrance and Kathy Hanson and sisters Nancy Griner and Donna Fitzgerald. A celebration of her life will be held on Saturday Dec. 8, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at Hodge Funeral Home, St. Maries with Pastor Parker McNeill officiating.
