Obituary of Dottie A. Hughes

Dorothy A. "Dottie" Hughes (95) longtime St. Maries resident, died December 5, 2012 at St. Maries, ID She was born August 21, 1917 to Charles and Esther Zimmerman at Wilkes-Barre, PA. She grew up there and graduated from E.L.Meyer High School with the class of 1935. Following graduation, she attended a local business school before going to work for the U.S. Government's War Man Power Commission in Washington D.C. While there she met and fell in love with J. Paul Hughes . After a 3 month courtship they were married October 31, 1942 at Wilkes-Barre. In 1943, they moved to Owensboro, KY and the following year they moved to Detroit, MI where she worked for the U.S.Government. She and Paul moved to Paul's hometown, St. Maries in 1947. She worked at the Milwaukee Hospital in administration and later worked as a bookkeeper for the family coal and beer distributing company. In 1954, with the adoption of their daughter and subsequent birth of their son in 1957, she became a stay at home mom and housewife. She was involved with her children's activities. She was a Campfire Girls leader and Day Camp Director as well as Bethel Guardian of the local Job's Daughters. Dottie was active in the local Mothers Club and in her church. She was a Deacon and Elder of the Community Presbyterian Church. She served as the church's youth choir director and taught Sunday school. Dottie's other interests were her love for needlework, ceramics and china painting, playing bridge and golfing when she was younger. She also enjoyed playing the piano. Her husband died in 2005. Beside being a member of the Comm. Presbyterian Church, Dottie was a Past Grand Matron of the Grand Chapter of Idaho and Past Matron of Idaho Chapter # 49 Order of the Eastern Star. She was also a member of Chapter AN of the P.E.O Sisterhood. She also served as secretary for the St. Maries Country Club. Dottie is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Cynthia and Larry Eubanks of Sterling, VA. and son and daughter-in-law John and Liz Hughes of St. Maries. She is also survived by her grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. Besides her husband Paul, she was preceded in death by brother George Ford. A visitation for Dottie will be held on Monday, Dec. 10, 2012 from 1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m. at Hodge Funeral Home. A celebration of her life will be Tuesday Dec. 11, 2012 at 11:00 a.m. at the Community Presbyterian Church , St. Maries with Rev. Nancy Goodwin officiating. Tribute services will be held by the Order of Eastern Star officers. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery with a gathering of family and friends following back at the church's fellowship hall.
