I worked for ITD in Coeur d'Alene for 26 years and Ralph was one of my favorite "head butters". He definitely marched to his own drummer, but he could be brought back inside the lines if you made a compelling argument. I appreciated his willingness to consider different ideas. We had some great discussions and we both came away the better for it. Despite any of his words to the contrary, Ralph did give a damn about the job, and worked hard to keep the highways around Santa safe, no easy task. After he retired, I missed our visits, and I miss them even more now. Take the time to keep up with your friends, if you can. Guys like Ralph don't come around very often in a lifetime. Rest in peace, my friend.

I had the pleasure of working with Ralph in the 70’s at LSI. Ralph was so witty and quick to respond in the most colorful of ways. I remember a day following a holiday when we were sitting in the office enjoying the moment when the phone rang. Before I could get to it Ralph snagged the call and it went something like this. A little old lady making the call was telling Ralph that the boys had missed her garbage and when should she expect them to be back to get it? Ralph’s quick response and to the point went as follows “the mfkrs will get there when the mfkrs get there” click. After a little discussion about phone etiquette we had a good laugh and that day has remained a memory that will stay with me for as long as I live. Ralph was a unique individual who will leave a void that will be hard to fill. RIP my friend so sorry to hear of your passing; My comdolences to the Wernecke family.

RIP little brother. You had a hard time when you came into this world, and you fought the evil cancer hard before you left it. Someday, we'll get together again on the other side Ralph. Goodbye.
