Liam was my whole life these last few months. I couldn’t be more thankful to have met him, and be apart of not only my life, but my biggest supporter in getting sober… I have never met a more kind soul than Liam… he’ll be in my heart forever.

Liam to me was my first love. To him, I was “Dave.” I remember the first time Liam walked into Tekoa high school I was working in the office as he registered and there were girls excusing themselves from class trying to sneak a peek of the new boy. It wasn’t until the next day we officially met, we had first period together and he sat in my seat his first day. I took the row behind and he was quick to compliment my baby pink colored nails. We played band together second period and It seemed like everyday after that we talked more and more. He asked me to be his girlfriend the day after his birthday and I remember for Christmas that year he got me a fancy necklace and the year after a bracelet. We loved to go on silly dates together like laser tag and spent most of our time laughing at inside jokes. He would always say things like “it’ll buff out” and I would impersonate his voice and talk about trapshooting, fishing, horn hunting and hound dogs. I remember when Liam was having a rough week I decided to treat him out and of course we ended up in a toy store. He saw a sloth stuffed animal and his eyes lit up, I bought it for him and we named it Douglas. From that day forward sloths were our favorite animal. He would win sloths for me at the fair along with other stuffed animals and we named each one. I would write him notes every month and he’d keep all of them in a memory box we had together. We loved to go to the lake, boating, and camping in the summertime. He also introduced me to Las Chavelas and live after five in Coeur D Alene which were some of our other favorite date spots. We went to most of our school dances together and one year to ask me to prom he baked a fortune cookie. On the inside it read “it’d be unfortunate if you didn’t go to, prom?” We were swing dancing the entire prom. Liam’s senior year was difficult for the two of us and as we grew apart I know we still thought of one another. We struggled together, cried and laughed. When you spend high school so close to one another it doesn’t always take marriage or continuing life together to be someone’s high school sweetheart and Liam was mine.

My favorite memory of Liam was a saying. When something is not right you say, “It will be okay “. Not Liam. He would say, “It’ll buff out “. Though I only knew him a couple years, I would still use this on occasion with my girls. They knew where it came from and we’d all laugh. Writing it now makes me smile through tears. I will remember the times we laughed and his saying will carry on. It’ll buff out Robert and Sandra; just going to take one day at a time. Jennifer Kalmes
