Obituary of Dennis Richard Shelden
Dennis Richard Shelden (84) longtime St. Maries, ID resident passed away at Kootenai Health on January 10, 2024. He was born to Wilbur and Jessie Shelden on March 28, 1939, in Douglas, WY. Dennis grew up in Wyoming until the age of 8 when they relocated to St. Maries, and in 1955 he went to work for the Chicago-Milwaukee Railroad as a Laborer.
On September 22, 1956, Dennis married Phoebe Ells in Coeur d’ Alene, and the couple made their home in St. Maries. In 1958 Dennis went to work for St. Maries Lumber Company; however, the mill burned down in 1961, so he found employment at Murphy’s Marina. He then went to work for Bud Beck Sr. at Standard Oil Company in 1963 and worked for him for 18 years. Barry Borgmann hired him 1981 as a Sawyer, and then he went to work for Gary Appel. In 1987 Dennis went to work for the city of St. Maries, retiring in 2004.
Dennis was an avid outdoorsman who enjoyed fishing, hunting elk, and 4 wheeling. He was also a wood worker who made clocks out of burl wood.
Dennis is survived by his wife Phoebe at their home in St. Maries; children Cheryl (Randy) Hill of Fernwood, ID, Richard (Tammi) Shelden of Post Falls, ID, and Howard Gregg of Puyallup, WA; brother Alan (Kathy) Shelden of St. Maries, ID; 10 grandchildren; 21+ great-grandchildren; numerous nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his brother Wilbur Shelden, and son Darby Shelden.
A memorial service will be Friday, January 19, 2024, at 11:00 am at the Eagles Lodge in St. Maries, ID. A gathering of family and friends to share a meal will follow.
