Obituary of Gene Francis Haeg

Eugene "Gene" F. Haeg (77) lifetime Benewah Co. resident, died Dec. 1, 2014 at Hospice House in Coeur d' Alene, ID. He was born June 2, 1937 to Raymond and Katherine (Stare) Haeg in Plummer, ID. He grew up near Plummer on the family farm. Gene graduated from Plummer High School with the class of 1956. Gene then attended Gonzaga University for one year. In 1958 Gene married Dixie Lee Chase. He continued to work on the family farm until 1959 when he went to work driving bulk oil and gasoline delivery truck for Ralph Frazier. Gene and Dixie's first child Cindi was born in 1959 and Gene asked Ralph for a raise as he was only making $300.00 per month. Ralph said "No", but he would sell Gene the oil distributorship. Thus, St. Maries Oil Company was born. Gene became a jobber for Phillips 66 Co. Daughter Terri was born that same year and he purchased Cabin City from John and Hilda Aktepy. It had a convenience store and 10 cabins that were rented out. Many St. Maries couples spent their honeymoon there following their wedding. Gene's son Rick was born in 1964 completing the family. Gene added a U-Haul dealership and purchased the 3rd Street Quick Stop, Junction Quick Stop, and the Plummer Quick Stop. Gene eventually sold all the Quick Stops except for Cabin City. The tire shop at Cabin city became a pizza restaurant. The Card lock and bulk plant was leased to CS. Gene retired due to health reasons. His work ethic was his life. Gene enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family and animals. In his earlier years, he loved racing snowmobiles for the Chase Chevrolet Racing Team. Gene is survived by his wife Dixie at the family home, son and daughter in-law Rick and Janie Haeg of St. Maries; his daughter Cindi Stevenson of Denver, CO, daughter and son in-law Terri and Bruce Hudson of Seattle, WA, brother and sister in-law Clarence and Barbara Haeg, and sister and brother in-law Anna Marie and Gary Willard of Plummer, ID. He is also survived by 8 grandchildren - Ashley Cotten, Austin Arnold, Cami Stevenson, Randi Frazier, Kyle Stevenson, Kellsi Ausman, Connor Haeg, and Kaci Haeg, 6 great-grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. Gene is preceded in death by brothers Raymond Haeg and Dennis Haeg. A Rosary will be at the St. Mary Immaculate Catholic church Friday December 5, 2014 11:00 followed by the Mass of Christian Burial.
