Obituary of Madeline M. Lockard

Madeline M. Lockard (87) longtime resident of St. Maries passed away on April 14, 2016. She was born to Abe and Pearl Bessette on March 1, 1929 in Argonne, WI. Madeline attended school in Argonne until the 8th grade. After her schooling she worked on her family’s farm. Madeline married Porter Lockard on March 8, 1947 in Crandon, WI. Shortly after their marriage the couple moved to St. Maries, ID and started their family. In 1951 the family returned to Wisconsin, and Madeline went to work as a waitress to help support her family. The family moved to St. Maries, ID in 1956. During her working career, Madeline had several jobs including Bud’s Drive-Inn, A&W, St. Maries Variety Store, and Safeway. She retired from Safeway after 17 years of service. During Madeline’s retirement she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, gardening, quilting, painting, arts, crafts, and canning. She was an active member of the St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church and was involved with the Catholic Ladies Bazaar. She was also known for entering her projects into the county fair. Madeline received a Volunteer Lifetime Achievement Award for serving more than 3,155 hours of volunteer time to the Senior Citizen of center of Benewah County. Her hours of service representing and economic impact to our community exceeding $63,763. Madeline is survived by her son and daughter in-law Tim and Cheryl Lockard of St. Maries, ID, her daughters and sons in-law Rose and Buddy Beck of St. Maries, ID, Penny and Gary Opheim of Whitefish, MT, and daughter Susan Ireland of Spokane, WA. She is also survived by her sisters Carol, MaryAnn, and Kiddo, 12 grandchildren, 21 great-grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren, and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her infant son Porter David, husband Porter, and her son Steve. A visitation will take place Friday April 22, 2016 9:00 am – 12:00 pm at Hodge Funeral Home. A funeral service is planned for Friday April 22, 2016 at 2:00 pm at St. Mary Immaculate Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Woodlawn Cemetery in St. Maries.
