Obituary of Robert Homer Day
Robert Homer Day 89, born and raised in San Francisco, CA only son of Gifford & Verda Day, departed this earth for baseball heaven January 20, 2017 in ID. Bob was succeeded in life by his wife Ann (O’Hara) Day of 50 years and raised 4 sons in Sunnyvale, CA together. After Ann’s long illness Bob married Sharon (Peat) Day who became his soulmate and partner of 18 years. Bob leaves behind 4 sons Tim (Kay), Michael (Joanne), Pat (Corinne) and Dennis; grandchildren Christina (Kylee), Devon, Kimberly (Rene), Kelly, Tricia (Ralph) and three great-grandchildren Angelina and twins due in March Harper & Hudson. As well as stepchildren Kindle (Calif) and step-grandchildren Kheana, Lyric, Cayla.
Bob attended High School of Commerce (’45) and was on the baseball team. His baseball career was quickly put on hold, he was drafted by the Navy where he received the WWII Victory Medal. Bob served in special services and quickly tried out and played on the Navy traveling baseball team. Out of the service Bob attended St. Mary’s College where he was drafted by the NY Yankees. His claim to fame was he was beat out in spring training by Yogi Berra. His professional career included catching for the Ventura Yankees & SF Seals baseball teams. He then married Ann and then moved the family to Sunnyvale, CA where in late 50’s & 60’s he was the little league coach everyone wanted to play for. He also was famous for his unique style of umpiring college teams (San Jose State, Stanford, Santa Clara, Berkeley). Bob and Sharon spent the last 10 years enjoying beautiful Idaho. He was an amazing father, coach, mentor, friend, husband and grandfather and will be missed – Baseball ran deep in his blood - Go Yankees!
A memorial service will be planned later this spring.
